Logan Matthew Kelley, 26, who is accused of allegedly killing Isis Atalia Montoya Romero, 19, on Wednesday, January 10, 2021, at a nightclub in Tijuana has been arrested by cops after being detained by security guards. Romero, who was an employee at the nightclub and a mother of a 3-year-old child died on the scene.

The New York Post revealed that Kelley had crept up behind Romero and sliced her neck with what was a 4-6 inch knife in Adelita Bar in Tijuana’s Zona Norte. The bar, according to its Instagram page calls itself the "most traditional and famous men’s club in Tijuana, since 1962." According to local news as translated by The New York Post, Romero was killed in a corridor of a motel that is in conjunction with the nightclub. Police were able to recover the murder weapon; the murder was also caught on video. It is not known whether the victin knew the accused.

The video, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune, shows a man "who appears to be Kelley" with a face mask, approach Romero from the back and put his arm around her neck. He then stabs her, and throws her on the ground before running away. It also shows that while Romero's killer was chased by security guards, she was struggling on the floor. It was around 9 pm when The Red Cross was called around the bar that is now surrounded by caution tape. The emergency personnel that arrived had declared Romero dead at the scene. According to the publication, witnesses told local news that Romero was talking to another man inside the corridor when she was approached by Kelley.

Who is Logan Kelley?

Kelley was born in Cleaveland, Ohio as per the 2013-14 Rutgers men’s basketball media guide and was raised in Mountainside, N.J. He is reportedly a former star athlete at a New Jersey high school and also played basketball at Rutgers University. The alleged killer had played three games for the university during the 2012-2013 season. He had then transferred to a university in Alabama called the University of Montevallo where he played 20 games in the 2015-2016 season. While at Governor Livingston High School, TMZ reported that Kelley "led the state of NJ in scoring" while he was a senior. It was also reported by NJ that he was the all-time leading scorer at his high school in Berkeley Height, N.J., with 1,324 points.

He played three games under coach Mike Rice as a walk-on at Rutgers and was even a scholarship recipient courtesy of Eddie Jordan, Rice’s successor. He ended up leaving the program though before his sophomore season. While some Mexican outlets reported the Tijuana police identified Kelley to be a US Marine, a United States Marine Corps media operations chief spokesperson confirmed to the Tribune that there is no record of him serving in the Marine Corps. Although, NJ reported that Kelley's brother Ried did serve in the United States Army.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported a State Department official said that the agency was aware of the incident. An official said, "When a U.S. citizen is detained abroad, the State Department provides all appropriate consular assistance. Due to privacy considerations, we do not have any information to share publicly at this time." The publication also revealed that the blade that was used by Kelley had "some type of seal and an image of an assault rifle etched onto the handle" as per images of the murder weapon that had been released by police that arrived at the scene. The death of Romero marks the 223rd homicide in Tijuana this year.
