Lindsey Graham says French Revolution has come to Democratic Party, Internet says ‘read a f**king book, Lady G’
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham's tweet has sparked a major controversy on social media. Making a reference to the French Revolution from the late 1790s, he tweeted, "It appears the French Revolution has now come to the Democratic Party based on initial primary results from New York and Kentucky. If you had any doubts about who is in charge of the Democratic Party ALL doubts should have been removed."
"@JoeBiden, @SpeakerPelosi, and @SenSchumer are figureheads. There is a growing radical liberal movement which will eventually cast them aside. The real power rests with @AOC, the Squad and affiliated individuals/groups," he added.
The senator from South Carolina added, "Every elected Democrat in office, and every Democrat running for office, lives in fear of the mob and The Squad. The idea of working with President @realDonaldTrump to accomplish objectives to help America is a one-way ticket to political exile. The Democrat Party will be held captive by the most radical political mob in modern American history. Their power and electoral success appears to be growing day by day."
The Twitter thread soon collected over 5,000 retweets and 7,000 likes and started quite a bit of chatter online around the French revolution and Graham was trolled for his tweets. "Um, the French Revolution was inspired by the American Revolution… which itself was inspired by the French Enlightenment… So maybe you should have thought through this hot take before tweeting it…" one user wrote and another said, "Joe Biden just beat out the 'radical left' for the Presidential nomination. Go back to bed, Lindsey." Another one wrote, "Listen #LadyG - the French Revolution overthrew a monarchy and established a republic. And Jaime Harrison is fast on your trail."
Calling him Lady G, many took to educate him about the French Revolution on Twitter. "The French Revolution, you say? In which rising social and economic inequality led to a democratic overthrow of a monarchy and the establishment of a republic? That French Revolution?" one said and another posted, "Good lord, for as much as yall tout the value of history, you seem to not actually know anything. The French Revolution was inspired by the American Revolution. Read a fucking book, Lady G."
"Stunning that a sitting US Senator like Lindsey Graham doesn't know the relevance of the French Revolution to American Democracy. Perhaps we should just let Lady G eat cake," one posted. Another tweeted, "My God Yes, the Republic which was followed by the reign of terror, an economic collapse, a dictator, and 15-year long war... and ultimately the monarchy was restored Saying the French Revolution led to a Republic is like saying Romeo and Juliet led to a happy ending."
It also started a debate about whether the French Revolution was good or bad and left many confused as to why it was even a discussion. "The French Revolution was a Middle-Class revolt that resulted in regicide, the Reign of Terror, the genocide of the Vendée, and ultimately collapsed into a dictatorship that consumed all of Europe in War.. all of which ended up empowering Prussian Germany and two World Wars," one said while another posted, "Massive levels of wealth inequality led to the French Revolution just like massive levels of wealth inequality are leading to the inevitable revolution in the United States. And the ruling class and the corrupt politicians who do their bidding will only have themselves to blame."
