'Light the Night': Inside Rose and Sue's friendship and their romance with Chiang Han

Spoilers for 'Light the Night'

Set in 1980s Taipei, 'Light the Night' is a story of love, deception, mystery and murder. The series follows Yu nung, known as Rose (Ruby Lin), a woman who runs a hostess bar in the city along with her best friend, Su Ching Yi, who is known as Sue (Cheryl Yang). However, with rumours of drug trades taking place at the bar, their lives soon take a dark turn.

Right from the get-go, Rose comes off as a sharp woman who tolerates no-nonsense when it comes to the smooth functioning of her club. However, despite this, she certainly has a warm demeanour to those she cares about. Rose and Sue's friendship is painted as a rock-solid one. Before the two of them could take over the bar, Rose found herself in prison as she took a fall for an undisclosed crime her husband committed.

Sue was there for her the entire time and helped her get back on her feet. Sue is also the godmother to Wu Tzu-wei, Rose's son. As explained in the series the two have been childhood friends and there is little that has come between their friendship. So when Rose is seen heartbroken after her relationship with Chiang Han (Rhydian Vaughan), a screenwriter ends, Sue is the one to comfort her. However, while Rose mends her broken heart, it turns out, Sue is also in love with Chiang Han.

She is the one who met him first at a library and the two and struck up a friendship. However, when she brought him over to Light, he and Rose sparked up a romance before she even had a chance to come clean about her feelings. After the breakup, Rose continues to be in love with Chiang Han, he is quick to take advantage of the fact that Sue is also in love with him. After ending his relationship with Rose, he is quick to enter one with Sue.

Sue, convinced that Chiang Han is genuinely in love with her, side this from her best friend until she is exposed by one of her hostesses, Aiko. Aiko resents Sue for breaking the heart of her classmate, He Yu En, and slowly begins to take revenge on Sue.

While Sue and Rose no longer see eye to eye, they still focus on running Light smoothly. However, when Chiang Han decides that he has had enough of Sue, he breaks up with her and adds insult to injury, declaring that if he were ever to settle down with anyone, it would be Rose. Heartbroken, Sue attempts suicide, only to be saved by her godson, Tzu-wei, who finds her just in time. Despite Sue's condition, Rose confronts Chiang Han about his actions, claiming that as much as she wants to hate Sue, she wants to find justice for her. Unfortunately, Sue and Rose continue to have a strained relationship right up until Sue's murder.

The second set of eight episodes will be available for streaming on December 3, 2021, and the final eight episodes will drop on December 10, 2021.
