'Legends of Tomorrow' Season 5 promises to continue the experimentation with magic, madness and metafiction

'Legends' may not follow the formula that has made shows like 'Batwoman' and 'Supergirl' popular, but that is precisely why this is a show that truly deserves to go on for a long, long time

DC's 'Legends of Tomorrow' has never exactly been one of the premier shows of the Arrowverse. Almost since its inception, the series has served as a platform for experimentation and that hasn't always worked in its favor.

However, it is exactly this willingness to be different that gives 'Legends of Tomorrow' its own unique edge.

In Season 5, the show will be combining a mostly magic-driven plotline with a touch of metafiction. It's going to be a brand new world in the wake of 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' and it is apparently going to be a brand new timeline as well.

After Zari (Tala Ashe) changed time to bring her brother, Behrad (Shayan Sobhian), back to life, the timeline of the Legends has been altered.

History is filling up with time blips, and it's up to the Legends to deal with them, right after they deal with their new celebrity lifestyles. Unfortunately, they're also going to have to deal with the newly resurrected Rasputin (yes, the evil Russian monk dude).

At this point, 'Legends of Tomorrow' is essentially 'Constantine and Friends', which we are definitely not complaining about. He might not be the main character but he is a huge part of why fans still love the show. Well, him and Caity Lotz's Sara Lance / White Canary.

Matt Ryan's John Constantine is an absolute delight and as much as we would love an R-rated take on the character that actually shows him exactly as he is in the comics, this is the closest we've ever come to a comics-accurate Constantine.

The character truly does bring some magic to the Arrowverse, both literally and metaphorically. And honestly, that's true of the show as a whole.

'Legends of Tomorrow' takes all the heroes who no longer fit in with any of the other Arrowverse shows and gives them a chance to become something more.

It's a show that's willing to take chances and isn't afraid to fail. 'Legends' may not follow the formula that has made shows like 'Batwoman' and 'Supergirl' popular but that's precisely why this is a show that truly deserves to go on and we hope to see many more seasons coming up after this one.

'Legends of Tomorrow' Season 5 begins with an episode of 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' on January 14.
