'Legacies' Season 2: What will the Saltzman twins' relationship be like this season and The Merge's effect on that

Lizzie and Josie went from being codependent to tumultuous to forming a sort of understanding by the end of the season.
PUBLISHED OCT 1, 2019

We were introduced to Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), the Saltzman twins in Julie Plec's 'The Vampire Diaries.' Daughters of Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis) and Josette Laughlin (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), the "bio mom", and Caroline Forbes (Candice King) - who gave birth to the twins after the Gemini Coven transferred them to her on Jo's death. With such a complicated beginning and so much history behind their family and coven, the Saltzman twins are bound to have a lot of baggage - one of which includes The Merge. We meet them again in 'Legacies' and we learn more about them - how they are together and individually. It looked quite one-dimensional at first, Lizzie is the outgoing, selfish one and Josie is the quiet, self-sacrificing one. But the show has managed to add so many layers to both characters within the first season itself.

We learn that Lizzie and Josie have a complicated, codependent relationship. And while many will be quick to sympathize with Josie, Lizzie was right when she said, "codependency takes two people." As we learn more about Lizzie's mental illnesses and Josie's wish to be heard, we also see new sides of them. Could Josie be the stronger one? In the season finale when Triad has taken over the school and one of them threatens to shoot the twins and Hope, Lizzie tries to jump ahead and get herself shot saving the others, but Josie was faster. By the end of the season, the sisters have sort of made up and Alaric has told them about their destiny by virtue of being the only Gemini twins left and the reason why Caroline hasn't been around (looking for how to break the curse).

We've learned that during the summer break (between season 1 and upcoming season 2), Josie will be learning more about The Merge and Lizzie will be vacationing with her mom. While it looks like Josie is again being the responsible one, we think that Lizzie would be doing her part as well - they both want to emerge out of this with their sister healthy and safe.

This could mean there is still that underlying rivalry and resentment between them - after all, these issues won't go away just like that. Forgetting Hope might play into that as well and the absence of her memory for both of them could trigger unresolved tensions. Perhaps Lizzie would also be learning more control and this could help with the twins' relationship. Certainly, they're going to have to be more united, especially for Alaric, since he now finds himself out of the school he founded to help his children. Then there is Josie possibly dating Landon and the addition of Sebastian, "a really old vampire" who could be really bad for Lizzie.

When 'Legacies' comes back in a few days, we are going to get a lot more answers and this time around, the season will have 20 episodes - which gives us more time to learn about our favorite magical twins.

'Legacies' returns to The CW for its second season on October 10, 2019.
