'Legacies' Season 2 Episode 3 reveals Vardemus may not be just a witch, we think he is something more sinister and evil

Fans are digging up theories and folklore on what Vardemus might be and what his endgame plan is since he seems intent on turning Josie Saltzman dark
PUBLISHED NOV 1, 2019

'Legacies' is not airing an episode this week but that doesn't mean we can't continue to dissect everything that happened in last week's episode where we saw a very disturbing scene at the end.

After the monster of the week — one that would hunt werewolves, but was really after Landon for Malivore — was killed, Vardemus shows up to its dead body and opens his mouth wide — and we mean really wide — and starts consuming the creature.

This has undoubtedly led to conclusions that Vardemus is not just a witch who believes in the superiority of supernatural beings — he is something else entirely, but what he is, is not clear yet.

One of the theories floating around is that Vardemus could be a Wendigo. This could explain how, despite Caroline's stringent search, Vardemus' nefarious characteristics slipped past her and he was able to secure a job as the Salvatore School's headmaster.

The wendigo comes from Algonquian Native American legends that spoke of a horrifying creature that would consume human flesh, endlessly hungry and with superior hunting abilities. It also had the power to possess its victims, but not before driving them insane.

It begins with the victims smelling strange odors — not available to others — and then they are tortured with nightmares as they slowly lose their minds from sleep deprivation. Then, they will experience an unbearable sensation through their legs and end up stripping down and running naked through forests like a madman.

This might be what happened to the real Vardemus as he was overtaken by a wendigo that is now possessing his body. It would also explain why Vardemus made a late-night snack out of last week's monster.

The wendigo is seen as an embodiment of gluttony, greed, and excess and this could also be inferred from Vardemus's wardrobe and general attitude. It could also explain why he wants supernatural beings to stop hiding and acknowledge him as superior.

'Legacies' airs on The CW on Thursday nights. The next episode of 'Legacies' will air on November 7.
