Spoiler alert for Season 2 Episode 9 of 'Kidding'

This episode, titled 'The Nightingale Pledge', sees the Piccirillo family overcome harsh life obstacles together.

Jeff Piccirillo (Jim Carrey) stays away from his family after an attacker decides to set his home on fire, his sister Deirdre Piccirillo (Catherine Keener) makes a hard decision to get back the ownership of the puppets on Puppet Time and their father Seb (Frank Langella) begins a new life with his ex-wife under sad circumstances.

After Jeff's family home that housed his wife Jill (Judy Greer), his son Will (Cole Allen) and Jill's fiancee Peter (Justin Kirk) is set on fire, Jeff retreats to the set of Puppet Time to keep his family away from danger.

The reason behind the attack seems to be an angry parent who isn't happy with the Listen To Me Pickles doll that allows children to speak to Jeff directly. The attacker is a man who wears a large Mr Pickles head — an odd accessory, he was also the same guy who threatened Jeff on a phone call in the last episode.

While on the set, Jeff's father Seb who had recently suffered a small stroke and kept that a secret, seems to have suffered another one. When he starts to use the props on set as though they were real, Jeff takes him to the hospital.

After Deirdre arrives, doctors let them know that the stroke caused Seb to lose his ability to speak as the stroke resulted in vascular dementia. With no other options at hand, the Piccirillo decides to put him in a home that cares for patients with dementia is an unconventional manner.

They have created a set where the elderly live in the past, comforting their senses because everything seems a lot familiar. The sweetest part of their decision is that Seb gets to reunite with his ex-wife at the home, although neither of them remembers being married to each other.

Deirdre is especially saddened by the circumstances because after recently being put in charge of the Pickle Empire she had lost ownership of the puppets to her vile ex-husband, Scott Perera (Bernard White).

Having had enough of him and realizing that she had to give in to his demands, she gets all the puppets back and gives him sole custody of their daughter Maddy (Juliet Morris). Although a hard decision, she credits her dad for being able to learn how to sacrifice.

On a scarier note, Will is visited by the attacker at school who tells him that his mother, who is a nurse and has taken the Nightingale Pledge, is harmful and blames her for the death of Phil (Cole Allen), Will's twin brother.

He then asks Will to get into the car with him claiming he's the new Mr Pickles and Will's new dad. Jeff, who ends up beating the guy to a pulp makes news and ends up selling more Listen To Me Pickles dolls along with bonding with his son as they take care of Seb.

Jeff says the one line that he's known for as Mr Pickles, "I am your family and I will protect you" and he realizes that he needs to be there for his real family — his son, father and sister.

The most important part we would say about this episode is that Jill seems to have donated Phil's organs without telling anyone. Will finds out about it and tells his father. Now we have to wait and watch for Jeff's reaction in the next episode.

'Kidding' Season 2 airs on Sundays at 10 pm EST on Showtime.
