'Rude' waiter at Karen's Diner informs customer she looked 'bulimic', Internet split over 'gag' insult
BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA: People are still in shock after seeing video of a server at Karen's Diner calling a customer "bulimic." Although Karen's Diner prides itself on having "rude staff but great burgers," it is the former, not the latter, that is causing it to gain a growing reputation.
Despite the fact that its burgers are indeed fantastic, some of the insults that its personnel have directed at unwitting consumers may not be ok despite these "insults" being the restaurant chain's signature running gag, played for laughs. The restaurant has previously had to issue an apology after a server dubbed a patron a "pedo," while another patron fled in tears following remarks on the color of her hair. However, it's obvious that other staff members haven't learned their lesson because a recent TikToker video showed a server at the restaurant calling a customer "bulimic." Cherry Hart, an Australian influencer, posted the video on TikTok detailing her visit to a chain restaurant called Karen's Diner in Brisbane, Australia.

The server can be seen taking Hart's order for a Karen's Seasonal Waffle Bowl and a Nutty Karen drink while seated at her table in the photo. In response to Cherry's order, the waiter states: "You do realise that dessert is f**king huge. I doubt you're going to eat it. You look like you're bulimic." Cherry then descends into 'uncomfy awkward laugh[ter]' to which the waiter says: "You're laughing so I must be right".
Since then, the post has received over 200,000 views, and other TikTokers have flocked to the video to express their displeasure at the waiter's remarks. One user said: "That is way out of line I’m so sorry." "Oh Jesus that’s not ok, as someone who sufferers with an ED it’s hard enough for me to eat on a night out, so this would upset me so much," another wrote. A third commented: "This would break me. I’ve never had bulimia but I struggled with anorexia for so many years. I thought they weren’t allowed to make body comments?"
Although several commenters on Instagram stated that being "rude" to customers was "the whole point of the restaurant," Karen's Diner did have a set of regulations, which the server unquestionably disobeyed. One of the diner's five "house rules" specifically prohibits "body shaming." Cherry observed that she hadn't even realized how much of a "big deal" the waiter's remarks were at the time. She made the decision to publish the video and spread the word after realizing the restaurant had a policy against body shaming.
