The popular 2020 drama, 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed' (orginally titled 'Gumihodyeon') is the story of Lee Yeon played by Lee Dongwook who is a 1000-year-old Gumiho (a nine-tailed fox) — the living manifestation of one of South Korea's ancient legends. Lee Yeon is on a search for the reincarnation of his one true love, Ah Eum. In an attempt to become one with his love, Lee Yeon leaves his brother Lee Rang, played by Kim Beom, unguarded and ends up putting his life in danger.

Due to this abandonment, Lee Rang develops a grudge against Lee Yeon. While still on his quest, Lee Yeon meets with Ji Ah who looks like his lover from the past and is actually a reincarnation of his lover, Ah Eum from the past. The K-drama 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed' aired on tvN from October 7 to December 3, 2020, every Wednesday and Thursday at 22:30 pm KST and has a total of 16 episodes with a record for the highest viewership rating of 5.8%. It subsequently also aired on Netflix for a global audience.

'Tale of the Nine-Tailed' gets two more seasons

On September 27, various news outlets confirmed the production of next season of the popular drama 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed'. tvN confirmed that the show has been renewed not just for Season 2 but for Season 3 as well. Reports suggest that both seasons will be produced concurrently. During the airing of the show, it was announced that a spin-off or a sequel was in the works. After almost a year since its release, the production team has announced that the show will be renewed with most of the original cast back on the show's new seasons.

It was reported that actors Lee Dongwook and Kim Beom will appear on the second and hopefully the third season of the show as well. It is expected that they will resume their respective roles as Lee Yeon and Lee Rang. The female lead of the show, Cho Boah, however, has decided against joining the cast and will be replaced by a new female lead.

The second and third seasons of the K-drama 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed' will be centered around the backstory, based on a flashback from its first season. (tvn.com)

'Tale of the Nine-Tailed' will air in 2022

It is reported that the two new seasons will have 16 episodes each just like other K-dramas. The show will start airing the second season in the first half of 2022. Information revealed by official sources have given spoilers for the upcoming seasons. It is reported that the second season will have elements from the Japanese Colonial Era while the third season will go back to its Korean roots in the Joseon Dynasty.

It is reported that after Cho Boah's withdrawal, the production team started looking for a new female lead. The second, as well as the third season of the show, will change the genre of the drama to a historical fantasy drama rather than being billed as a modern-day romance fantasy, like it was in the first season.

A tvN official reported the release of the new seasons of the show saying, "We are positively discussing the second season of the drama 'Gumiho' while the director of Season 1 of the show, Kang Shinhyo will be in charge of directing." Fans of Lee Dongwook and Kim Beom can watch the first season on Netflix.
