The hashtag #BlackfaceHitler took social media by storm on Sunday, February 20, as platforms were inundated with memes and videos railing against liberal Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after he invoked the Emergencies Act against protesters in Ottawa.

The backlash came shortly after 50-year-old Trudeau announced the use of the controversial act for the first time in Canadian history. He deployed police forces to help break up the anti-vaccine mandate trucker protests - dubbed the Freedom Convoy - by arresting demonstrators and towing trucks that blocked various ports of entry between Canada and the US. It's worth noting that the protests have found an outpouring of support on social media, including from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who likened Trudeau to Adolf Hitler on Twitter. Meanwhile, the convoy has received more than $10 million in donations since January.

#BlackfaceHitler became a jab against Trudeau after he faced controversy in 2019 when photos surfaced of him wearing blackface in 2001. The PM later said in an interview that he wasn't sure how many times he had worn blackface. In a recent address to the nation, Trudeau accused the truckers and other protesters of spreading "hateful rhetoric," expressing "violence toward fellow citizens," as well as being "an insult to memory and truth."

Last week, Trudeau slammed the convoy as constituting a "small fringe minority" of people who held "unacceptable views." Going by local news reports and videos of the scenes out of Ottawa, the protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful despite thousands of people taking to the streets. TV personality Gillian McKeith shared a video of a man being physically removed from a ski lift for allegedly refusing to wear a mask.

"This is the #canada that #TrudeauTyranny has created," McKeith captioned the video.

"I have faith in the truckers to get it in gear. Brave men and women fighting for freedom while the world watches a tyrant intoxicated by power," Georgia congressional candidate Mark Gonsalves added.

Meanwhile, radio host Tara Servatius compared Canada's leadership to George Orwell's 1984. "From 2 weeks to stop the spread to we're freezing your bank account for wrongthink donations ... in just two years," Servatius wrote, referencing the Emergencies Act's authorization to freeze private bank accounts without court orders.

The hashtag #BlackfaceHitler trended on social media on Sunday as it was flooded with criticisms of Trudeau.

"So, the UN deployed “police” to Ottawa for #BlackFaceHitler’s crackdown?!" actor Adam Baldwin tweeted.

"#BlackfaceHitler should be tried at Nuremberg for crimes against humanity," one Twitter user wrote.

"Clean up Ottawa and the "violent minority fringe" just pops up somewhere else. This is an unwinnable game of whackamole for @JustinTrudeau. #BlackfaceHitler," another offered.

"#BlackfaceHitler is trending for a reason! There is no recovering from this, but a coward backed into a corner with nowhere to go can be very dangerous," someone else added.

"What are the chances that sackless soy flake Justin Trudeau is going to have UN soldiers show up at my door and arrest me because I am still unvaccinated?? #TrudeauTyranny #BlackfaceHitler," another chimed in.

While the Emergencies Act immediately went into effect earlier this week, Canadian lawmakers are yet to vote in favor or against the act. The vote is expected to take place on Monday, February 21.
