Who is Kate Norley?
Kate Norley enlisted in the army after high school in Arlington, Virginia. It was a decision that was made following the 9/11 attacks. According to reports, she served in Iraq as a U.S. Army combat medic in Fallujah and Ramadi and as a mental health specialist in the field, counseling soldiers on returning back to conflict. Norley is a dedicated soldier who, while serving in 2004, reportedly said, "If they told me tomorrow I could go home ... I wouldn't be satisfied I’m finished with what I set out to do."
She had also appeared on Fox News to campaign for more funding for American troops. She now works as a veterans' rights advocate for Vets for Freedom, an organization that was founded in 2006 by the country’s Iraqi and Afghan war veterans. The advocacy group’s purpose is victory in the ongoing War on Terrorism.
Going by his words, it looks like Oliver can't help but be in awe of his wife. "I can’t come home and say I had a really tough day at work today and see her roll her eyes and go, 'Really? I can’t imagine how difficult it was for you. You clown!'" John had reportedly said. "Rightly, I have no place to whine about anything. That’s the problem with living with someone who has fought a war. You lose the moral high ground."
How did the two meet?
So how did their love story begin? Oliver and Norley met at the 2008 Republican Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. At the time, he was working as a senior British correspondent for 'The Daily Show' with Jon Stewart. But trouble was just around the corner. According to reports, Oliver was on a temporary work visa and when the convention's security realized who he was, he was in deep trouble for being in the restricted area.
Enter his knightess in shining armour! According to The Boston Globe, Norley and Vets for Freedom members helped hide Oliver and his crew from security. They became friends after this meeting. Oliver and Norley would then go on to date for two years before getting engaged in July 2010. A year later, they got married. The couple has two children, both boys. One was born in 2015 and the other in 2018. Notoriously private, Oliver revealed the existence of his second son accidentally, three months after his birth at the 2018 Emmy Awards Governors Ball. While speaking to People, Oliver had joked that his latest Emmy would go "as far away from the 3-month-old as possible".
