First Lady Jill Biden apologized for saying Texas Latinos are as "unique" as "breakfast tacos" while speaking at the 2022 UnidosUS Annual Conference titled “Siempre Adelante: Our Quest for Equity” in San Antonio on Monday, July 11. “The First Lady apologizes that her words conveyed anything but pure admiration and love for the Latino community,” Jill's spokesperson Michael LaRosa tweeted.

“Raul [Yzaguirre] helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community — as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio — is your strength,” Jill said in a speech to the group UnidosUS.

The First Lady was also trolled for mispronouncing “bodega” during a speech to a Hispanic advocacy group. During a speech in San Antonio, Texas, Jill pronounced "bodega" as “bow-get-taas”, a pronunciation that was closer to that of Colombian capital “Bogotá” than the standard pronunciation “bow-day-guh". In the speech, Jill praised the “bow-get-taas” of The Bronx. In the US, a bodega refers to a small neighborhood grocery. Now used by residents of all ethnicities, it originated with New York City’s Puerto Rican residents.

Her comments were blasted by Republicans who argued that they show why Democrats are going to lose Hispanic voters. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) responded to Jill's comments. "NAHJ encourages @FLOTUS & her communications team to take time to better understand the complexities of our people & communities," the association wrote. "We are not tacos. Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by various diasporas, cultures & food traditions. Do not reduce us to stereotypes."

'She apologized to who... you?'

The Internet, however, is not content with Jill's apology. A number of social media users said that the First Lady should have apologized herself, directly from her own account. "She apologized to who... you? Will she be making a public statement or no?" one user wrote on Twitter. "She didn’t say it. But of course you’d accept an apology by proxy. She called you a freaking taco… and you’re like, “Meh…”," another user said. One user said, "Don't you mean "Latinx" community? As long as you continue to use a word that NO HISPANICS actually use, no one is going to believe Jill Biden's apology for comparing Hispanics to tacos."

"It's a shame that "Doctor" Jill doesn't have her own Twitter account. Wait!! She does!! @FLOTUS!! I guess apologies to the peasants are beneath her. Even insincere half as**d ones," one suer wrote, while another said, "Jill Biden didn’t tweet an apology herself because she doesn’t know she apologized yet." "Why does Jill’s press secretary make a statement instead of Jill herself? She said the words, now SHE should say her apology. Jill Biden slammed for comparing Latino people to tacos in what Hispanic journalists called a 'stereotype'," said one user.
