Missouri Senator Josh Hawley stated that his family was threatened during a protest outside his suburban Washington, DC, home on Monday night, January 4. But the activists said they staged a peaceful vigil to protest a GOP plan to object to Congress’s certification of the presidential electoral vote this week.

On the sidewalk in a Northern Virginia suburb, a group of 15 people chanted while holding candles and signs reading, “Protect democracy.” Even the police department called the protest peaceful. But Hawley had a different description of the scene. He wrote: "Tonight while I was in Missouri, Antifa scumbags came to our place in DC and threatened my wife and newborn daughter, who can’t travel. They screamed threats, vandalized, and tried to pound open our door. Let me be clear: My family & I will not be intimidated by leftwing violence."

Protesters with ShutDownDC, which organized the protest, said that they did not engage in vandalism or even knock on Hawley’s door. The group shared a 50-minute video, where demonstrators can be seen writing in chalk on the sidewalk and chanting through a megaphone. Four people from the group can be seen walking up to the front door of the home. They were seen sticking something on the front door handle. The group later tweeted a photo and said they left a copy of the Constitution on the door. The group later tweeted: "We stopped by @HawleyMO’s house with some friends tonight to encourage him to rethink his attack on democracy. We left him a copy of the Constitution... with Article II bookmarked. #DefendDemocracy."

During the protest, at one point, some police officers from Vienna Police Department showed up in front of the house. An officer was heard telling one of the protesters that she’s been told that it’s illegal for them to be demonstrating in front of a residence. She asked the crowd to quietly protest while waiting for a supervisor to arrive. A police supervisor told the group that using a megaphone for an extended period violated the city's noise ordinance. Apart from that, protesting outside somebody's house is illegal in Virginia. Police informed the demonstrators that the signs, chalk messages and candles they were leaving in front of the home was also considered littering. In all, protesters were outside the house for about 30 minutes. They ended the demonstration with a prayer and left quietly.

As soon as the claims made their way to social media, more and more people started reacting to it, as one internet user said, "Police were at John Hawley's house. Josh Hawley said protesters vandalized it. The police said there was NO vandalism. Somebody is LYING. I think it's Josh Hawley. #JoshHawleyIsALiar." Blogger Alan Ilagan wrote: "We see you, @HawleyMO. May this forever mark your future, in addition to your unholy alliance with Trump. #JoshHawleyIsALiar."

Another one slammed him and said, "JoshHawleyIsALiar he lies about where he lives, hide behind his wife and baby. He’ll probably lie about having COVID just to get our off the mess by him for tomorrow." Author Don Winslow shared a video and wrote, "NEW VIDEO: #JoshHawleyIsALiar Watch this short video and expose this liar who used his wife and child to create a fake "victim" story. Just disgusting."

One said, "Josh Hawley literally made up a fake attack on his house that never happened and used used his wife and child to create a fake "victim" story that has been exposed. Watch the video. #JoshHawleyIsALiar twitter.com/donwinslow/sta…" While another one wrote, "@SenHawleyPress when you lie. The truth will be shown to the people. Stop lying. Be a real man. #JoshHawleyIsALiar."
