Is Francesca pregnant with John's baby? Bridgerton 4’s bombshell sets up emotional arc for Season 5
Season 4 of ‘Bridgerton’ wrapped up Benedict and Sophie’s Cinderella-tinged romance. But while the main protagonists were sharing longing glances, a heavier storyline was unfolding on the sidelines. When Part 1 opened, Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) returned from her honeymoon with John Stirling (Victor Alli), the gentle Earl of Kilmartin. They were accompanied by Eloise (Claudia Jessie). On the surface, everything looked steady and even sweet. Francesca and John shared that easy companionship that makes you think, okay, this might actually work. But soon, Francesca began worrying about her difficulty conceiving. She convinced herself something was missing, a mysterious “pinnacle” she had apparently never reached.
What followed were some of the season’s most awkward and oddly funny scenes, as Francesca directly asked the women around her to define what exactly this entailed. Still, beneath the humor sat a growing sense of unease. Francesca’s life had already shifted after marriage, but Part 2 pulled the rug out entirely. That’s because John died. He simply excused himself for a nap after mentioning a headache, lay down, and never woke up. One minute he was finishing a puzzle with Francesca and Michaela, the next he was gone. Francesca’s response? Surprisingly composed.
While her family braced for hysteria, she remained calm. Eventually, in a private moment with Eloise and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan), she confessed the reason for her restraint: she believed she might be pregnant. And if she was carrying John’s child, then a part of him would remain in her life. For a while, that possibility held her together. Then came Mr. Dundas and the matter of inheritance, as the Kilmartin title required clarity. Is there an heir or not? Francesca was subjected to a disturbing examination to determine the truth, and the test confirmed that she was not pregnant. And that is when her composure shattered. The grief she had been holding at arm’s length rushed in all at once.
Fans are wondering whether her story takes center stage next season or if Eloise finally claims the spotlight. Showrunner Jess Brownell has been careful with her words. She’s confirmed that both sisters will eventually lead their own love stories. But who steps forward in Season 5? That answer is apparently coming soon. In an interview with Decider, Brownell explained, “We want to give fans a moment to really celebrate Yerin and Luke and everything they’ve put into this season, but we are starting production very soon on Season 5, and we tend to make an announcement close to the start of production about who the new leads are. So you should expect that this season as well.” Francesca’s arc now sits at a crossroads.
