Iowa woman stabs pet cat repeatedly and tries to drown her in bathtub, claims she did it in 'self-defense'
DES MOINES, IOWA: A 21-year-old woman from was arrested for allegedly trying to kill her cat. Kay Buelow allegedly stabbed her cat, named Sophie, three times with a kitchen knife, and then tried to drown her in a bathtub.
When police arrived at Buelow’s home on the early morning of May 25, she told them that her “aggressive” kitty bit her when she was taking shower. So in self-defense, she stabbed the animal. “Officers discovered serious inconsistencies and, upon further investigation, learned that Buelow had stabbed the cat, and then attempted to drown it because she didn’t want to care for it anymore and she did not believe that a shelter would take the cat,” Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parizek told the Des Moines Register as reported by The Metro.
After checking on the cat, police reportedly called the Animal Rescue League of Iowa to pick up the cat, who was “huddled in the bathroom, bleeding from multiple stab wounds, soaking wet, terrified,” animal rescue workers wrote in a Facebook post. “Her flesh was raw and bleeding, and the weapon had narrowly missed her spine. Sophie’s neck had also been stabbed and she was suffering from another stab wound near her shoulder,” the group said in the social media post.
The organization also added that they immediately treated Sophie by giving her “pain medications and antibiotics and gently cleaned her wounds to prepare her for what was next: The wounds on her back were so severe that they required a long line of staples to close. The wound near her shoulder is still very swollen and we don’t know yet if it will require surgery. We’re also watching her closely for signs of pneumonia from water inhalation.” The group has reportedly raised more than $6,000 for the cat’s recovery.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the accused Buelow has been charged with animal torture and is being held on a $2,000 bond at the Polk County Jail.
In a similar incident, a North Carolina teenager was arrested and charged after he allegedly threw a dog from a balcony and posted the attack on social media. The alleged attack on the animal left it badly injured.
According to Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Jashon Tyrell Hampton was arrested without incident on Friday, May 22, and charged with felony animal cruelty. The 18-year-old’s arrest reportedly came after an unidentified person sent a copy of the video to the sheriff’s office on Wednesday, May 20. The animal abuse clip was reportedly posted on social media on May 19.
The video of the abuse showed the accused Hampton dropping the stray dog from the balcony, causing injuries to the dog. It was believed that the animal didn't have to go through further torment after the heartbreaking incident. Reports also claimed that deputies made several attempts to find the abused dog but did not succeed. The suspect reportedly appeared before a magistrate and his bond was set at $1,000.
