NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump made an appearance at a rally in Houston, Texas on Thursday, November 2, where he spoke about the January 6 Capitol rioters.

In May this year, Politico reported that the January 6 sentences were piling up, with more than a thousand rioters arrested.

During the rally, Trump labeled the rioters “political prisoners” and “J6 hostages,” to which ‘Morning Joe’ hosts Joe Scarborough and Willie Geist reacted, and they were far from impressed.

Scarborough expressed his disappointment with the statement made by the former President and labeled it “pure evil.”

Joe Scarborough slams Donald Trump over January 6 rioters remark

‘Morning Joe’ played a clip of former President Donald Trump at the rally in Houston.

Here, Trump said, “I thank you very much. You know what that was? That was, I call them the J6 hostages, not prisoners. I call them the hostages, what's happened…It's a shame.”

Trump said this after the rally played a version of the National Anthem recorded by imprisoned January 6 rioters.

As the clip ended, Willie Geist, who had a stoic expression, was the first to respond, “Joe, there's Donald Trump calling the people who attacked the United States Capitol, who beat up police officers with American flags, who desecrated the people's House, calling them hostages. I just have to say, as a patriotic person, to watch the President of the United States.”

Geist corrected himself and continued, “The former president, stands there in front of American flags, saluting, saluting a group, that group of people who are in jail for what they did January 6th, it's repulsive.”

Scarborough responded, “Well, and if you ask the families of the four police officers who died, they will tell you, it was those people responsible for their deaths.”

As he spoke, ‘Morning Joe’ played clips from the riot at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“It was those people that took American flags, that our servicemen and women have taken into battle for centuries to defend freedom here and across the world. They used those flags as instruments of death, hoping to kill officers,” added Scarborough.

He continued, “As you said, desecrated the people's house and tried to overthrow democracy because they believed Donald Trump's lies. There, we have police officers being attacked from all sides, having their heads crushed in doors. Police officers were taken to the ground, having bear spray was used against them. Just….this is just pure…pure evil.”

Donald Trump faces backlash following ‘Morning Joe’ report

After ‘Morning Joe’ hosts Willie Geist and Joe Scarborough reacted to Donald Trump calling the January 6 rioters ‘J6 hostages,’ the internet was quick to respond.

One user wrote, “It's repulsive because Trump's repulsive. That man needs to be in prison. Many of those "hostages" admitted that they did what they did because Trump told them to.”

“They're hostages to their own stupidity and blind rage,” said one user, and another commented, “I wish Trump would just go away forever.”

One user commented, “I feel Trump has lost what little mind he had...I feel he needs to be in a hospital, not a White House...” and another expressed, “Just the 99,999th thing he’s said that would otherwise sink a political candidates chances, but the cult will continue to ignore, deflect and excuse. Shameless.”

Trump continued to face backlash for his statement, “They broke into the capitol. They got convicted. And the dude has the gut to claim them as hostages. Not a smart person,” said one person, and another claimed it was, “very sad and very disturbing.”
