WASHINGTON, DC: The Covid pandemic most likely emerged from a laboratory leak in Wuhan, China, according to a newly updated classified intelligence report from the US Energy Department. The department described the “likely” laboratory-related leak as an "accident."

According to The Wall Street Journal, which was the first to report the news on Sunday, February 26, the Energy Department has now joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in claiming that "the virus likely spread via a mishap at a Chinese laboratory. Four other agencies, along with a national intelligence panel, still judge that it was likely the result of a natural transmission, and two are undecided." The outlet further stated, "The Energy Department made its judgment with 'low confidence,' according to people who have read the classified report" and added, "The FBI previously came to the conclusion that the pandemic was likely the result of a lab leak in 2021 with 'moderate confidence' and still holds to this view."

'There is not a definitive answer'

Commenting on it, a Department of Energy spokesperson told CNN, "The Department of Energy continues to support the thorough, careful, and objective work of our intelligence professionals in investigating the origins of COVID, as the President directed." While National security adviser Jake Sullivan said, "Right now, there is not a definitive answer that has emerged from the intelligence community on this question. Some elements of the intelligence community have reached conclusions on one side, some on the other. A number of them have said they just don’t have enough information to be sure.”

On May 27, 2020, researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory issued a classified report that stated it was possible that the coronavirus escaped from a lab in Wuhan. A Livermore spokesperson confirmed the existence of the report but declined to provide additional details, as per ABC 7 News.

'Anthony Fauci and Biden officials called this a conspiracy'

Following the update, many were quick to comment. One wrote, "There was always enormous evidence that the Wuhan coronavirus leaked from the Wuhan lab. I’m glad the Department of Energy recognizes this reality. It’s past time to make the CCP pay." One more said, "It was always obvious that COVID likely came from the lab in Wuhan. Our government lied in suggesting potherwise. Why?"

Many slammed President Joe Biden and Former Chief Medical Advisor to the President of the US, Anthony Fauci, with one saying, "The COVID-19 virus came from a Lab Leak in Wuhan, China. The "conspiracy theorists" were right the whole time. Fauci lied, people died." Another commented, "For years, Anthony Fauci and Biden officials called this a conspiracy." While one of many continued to say, "Let me get this straight. US government funded research in the Wuhan lab. That involved creating new coronaviruses. And today, US government admitted that the Covid-19 coronavirus was most likely a leak from the same Wuhan Lab. Why isn’t this headline news all over the world?"

One pointed to the death of Dr Li Wenliang, who was the first to raise alarm about the coronavirus in the early days of the outbreak. The individual wrote, "Do you remember the "institutional" and social media corpo response in the first half of 2020 when someone contradicted the consensus? They were punished for the "crime" of "disinformation." Corporations must never again be permitted to police speech."
