CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: R Kelly has been sentenced to one year for federal pedophilia charges, dodging an effective life sentence on Thursday, February 23, bringing his prison time to 31 years. Following the Chicago judge's sentencing of R Kelly just one year, social media became furious about how would the jail time serve justice.

The 56-year-old rapper was sentenced to 20 years behind bars in his Illinois case adding 19 years to be run concurrently to his 30-year sentence in his 2021 Brooklyn case for his conviction on racketeering and sex trafficking charges. The only extra year to be served comes after he dodged the prosecutor's request to sentence him to 25 years which would lead him to serve up to the age of 99 when released in 2066, reported the Daily Mail.

What are the charges against R Kelly?

In 2022, the disgraced R&B singer whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly was convicted by a Chicago jury on six of 13 counts which included three counts relating to child porn videos produced that showed himself abusing his goddaughter, 14, and three others of manipulating minors for sex.

During his Thursday hearing, he responded to US District Judge Harry Leinenweber's question on whether he had taken a review of the evidence for any inaccuracies. "Your honor, I have gone over it with my attorney. I’m just relying on my attorney for that," Kelly said.

Under the pseudonym 'Jane', an accuser read her statement in court and said, "I have lost my dreams to Robert Kelly. I will never get back what I lost to Robert Kelly. I have been permanently scarred by Robert. When your virginity is taken by a pedophile at 14 … your life is never your own," while asking the judge for Kelly's harsh punishment.

Another accuser under the pseudonym 'Nina' addressed the convicted sexual predator directly and with a quivering voice, she said, "Now you are here because there is something wrong with you. No longer will you be able to harm children.”

Following the 2019 release of 'Surviving R Kelly', the Lifetime docuseries that detailed his abuse of minors, Kelly became the target of criminal charges and widespread outrage. After he falsified documents, he illegally married Aaliyah when the late singer was just 15, according to New York Post.

'That sentence is an insult to the victim'

Following the Chicago judge's sentencing Kelly to serve just one year for the pedophilia charges, the internet raged at the rapper dodging a 'life sentence'. One Twitter user wrote, "1 year? Seriously?" and another commented "So he will be in jail for 31 years. Should be longer" while someone opined, "Our justice system is messed up." Another user wrote, "They should have given him all of the extra 25 years that the prosecutors wanted."

"Only 1 year?," a user commented and someone wrote, "This is exactly what is wrong with the judicial system in Chicago. That’s not even a slap in the hand. So much for justice for the victims." Disappointed at Kelly serving his total jail term concurrently one user remarked, "Why sentences don’t just add on? More crime, do more time! As simple as that. Laws just help criminals to reduce their serving time," and another commented, Only a year? Lock this thug up for life."
