BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA: Olivia Dunne, a 20-year-old gymnast from Louisiana State University (LSU) who has been named the most influential female college athlete, recently shut down a fan who made an inappropriate NSFW comment by typing "Mommy" with a heart emoji. About LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne
With more than 6.8 million followers on TikTok and 3.6 million on Instagram, Dunne shot to fame in 2019 after posting gymnastic-related videos on TikTok, states Indy100. However, it was in 2014, when she started competing as a gymnast and in 2017, became a member of the US National Gymnastics Team. She currently competes at the collegiate level in the NCAA.
Dunne, who earns $2 million a year through name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, was also criticized by Tara VanDerveer, a well-known women's basketball coach. VanDerveer stated that these deals are harmful to female athletes in conversation with the New York Times. The coach said, "I guess sometimes we have this swinging pendulum, where we maybe take two steps forward, and then we take a step back. We're fighting for all the opportunities to compete, to play, to have resources, to have facilities, to have coaches, and all the things that go with Olympic-caliber athletics. This is a step back."
