'Can you believe that?'

During a 2021 appearance at ‘The Tonight Show’ with Jimmy Fallon, Madonna candidly shared about her biggest regrets in her career. One of them being turning down some of the iconic roles of Hollywood. The ‘Frozen’ crooner said, “I turned down the role in The Matrix. Can you believe that? I wanted to kill myself. That’s like one of the best movies ever made. A teeny-tiny part of me regrets just that one moment in my life.”

Not only the Keanu Reeves starrer popular franchise, but she also regrets not signing up ‘Batman Returns’ where she was asked to play the Catwoman and ‘Showgirls’. She continued saying, "I saw them both and I regret that I turned down Catwoman, that was pretty fierce," mourning about the role that later went to Michelle Pfeiffer. However, for ‘Showgirls’, her answer was a bit different as she said, “‘Showgirls?’ No."

'There were times when I felt incarcerated'

While talking about regrets, do you know what the ‘Madame X’ star regrets most in her life? Many of her fans were not surprised when she revealed in a Q & A session with her fans that one of her biggest regrets in her personal life is her decision to get married. When asked about her regret, she said, “Getting married.” She also added for clarity, “Both times.”

Madonna was married twice in her life. In 1985, the Queen of Pop married Sean Penn with whom she divorced in 1989. Later, she got married to the British director Guy Ritchie. This marriage also did not last long as the pair decided to divorce in 2008. In a 2015 interview to The Sun UK, the ‘Holiday’ singer spoke about the constricted feeling she had as an artist while being in the marriage to Ritchie.

She said, "I think when you get married you have to be willing to make a lot of compromises and that’s fair enough," before adding, "I think that’s the way it goes in relationships. However, you know, I did find myself sometimes in a state of conflict. There were many times when I wanted to express myself as an artist in ways that I don’t think my ex-husband felt comfortable with." However she added, "There were times when I felt incarcerated.” She mourned the lack of individuality and freedom of expression she felt during her wedded years, “I wasn’t really allowed to be myself."
