Who is Kaitlin Armstrong?
Kaitlin was born on November 21, 1987, in Livonia, Michigan, United States. She attended Stevenson High School and graduated in 2005.
Eager to pursue higher education, she enrolled at Schoolcraft College. Kaitlin later transferred to Eastern Michigan University to continue her studies. Eventually, Kaitlin pursued a career as a yoga teacher in Texas.
Kaitlin was in an on-and-off relationship with Colin Strickland, a professional cyclist known for his competitive spirit and achievements in the field.
Their relationship was characterized by both highs and lows. At times, they were inseparable, while at others, they struggled to get along. However, despite the challenges, they always managed to find their way back to each other.
Kaitlin's life took a drastic turn in 2022 when she was accused of killing professional cyclist Moriah Wilson, with jealousy cited as a possible motive.
Who was Moriah Wilson?
Moriah was born on May 18, 1996, in Littleton, New Hampshire, United States, to Eric and Karen Wilson.
She was raised in Kirby, Vermont, and completed her education at Burke Mountain Academy in 2014. Later, she graduated from Dartmouth College in 2019, earning a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree.
Her passion for cycling ignited early in life. Fueled by her competitive spirit and drive, she excelled in various sports, including skiing, garnering national recognition as a junior skier.
Despite her success as a nationally-ranked junior skier, Moriah eventually transitioned to gravel cycling, where she found further success and achievement in her cycling career.
Colin was also romantically involved with Moriah while still in a relationship with Kaitlin. They would frequently go on dinner dates together.
Why did Kaitlin Armstrong kill Moriah Wilson?
On the night of May 11, 2022, Moriah was found lying in a pool of blood at a friend's residence in Austin, Texas.
According to Fox 7 Austin, Moriah was shot and killed at a home on Maple Avenue near East 17th Street. She had been staying there with a woman named Caitlin Cash
When Caitlin returned to her house, she found Moriah bleeding. She called 911 and authorities arrived to investigate the incident. Authorities discovered Moriah with multiple gunshot wounds, which ultimately led to her death.
Surveillance footage from a neighbor later revealed an SUV arriving at the Maple Avenue apartment. The vehicle resembled one registered to a woman who lived with Colin, later identified as his girlfriend Kaitlin.
As the investigation continued, it was disclosed that Kaitlin reportedly became aware of the relationship between Moriah and Colin, which reportedly motivated her to kill Moriah.
Was Colin Strickland involved in killing Moriah Wilson?
Colin informed the police that he and Kaitlin had been in a relationship for approximately three years before experiencing a brief separation lasting one to two weeks in October 2021.
During their brief separation, Colin met Moriah, and the two developed a romantic relationship. However, despite reconciling with Kaitlin, Colin did not end his relationship with Moriah.
Text messages exchanged between Colin and Moriah revealed that Moriah was under the impression that she and Colin were in a committed relationship. However, he was still in a relationship with Kaitlin at the time.
Colin also admitted to investigators in May 2022 that he had deliberately kept his relationship with Moriah a secret from Kaitlin, as reported by Fox 7 Austin.
Hours before Moriah's death, she went for a swim with Colin at Deep Eddy Pool, followed by a dinner date. However, Colin was ruled out as a suspect after a police investigation determined that he did not drop Moriah off at her friend's house where she was staying.
What happened to Kaitlin Armstrong?
Following a brief interrogation with the police, law enforcement authorities were unable to locate Kaitlin. She vanished after the interrogation.
Colin, during the investigation, stated that he had not had any contact with Kaitlin since May 13, 2022. This information further complicated the investigation, raising questions about Kaitlin's whereabouts.
According to CBS News, the US Marshals launched a manhunt for Kaitlin after receiving information that she had traveled from Austin to Houston, and then to New York City. Despite their efforts, they were unable to locate her.
Authorities later found that Kaitlin had fraudulently used another person's passport to travel from Newark International Airport to San Jose, Costa Rica, on May 18, 2022.
Kaitlin resorted to using multiple identities and even underwent plastic surgery to alter her appearance, all in a bid to evade capture by law enforcement.
However, she was arrested on June 29, 2022, at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Costa Rica over an immigration violation. During the six-hour drive back to San Jose, Kaitlin maintained that she was Ari Martin. However, she eventually confessed her true identity as Kaitlin Armstrong.
On November 16, 2023, Kaitlin was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 90 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after 30 years. She is currently serving her sentence at Dr Lane Murray Unit.
