'How to Get Away with Murder' season 6 episode 1 introduces an Asher, Michaela, Gabriel love triangle and it's getting very confusing

The season 6 premiere shows Asher and Gabriel both trying to get through to Michaela, but only one will emerge as the winner of her affections.

This article contains spoilers for season 6, episode 1.

We are just one episode into 'How to Get Away with Murder's final season 6  and we can already smell a love triangle brewing. After months and years of sharing a really confusing bond, right when we thought the whole Asher and Michaela thing was over, with her veering towards Gabriel, season 6, episode 1 'Say Goodbye' shows the former lovers having a possible chance at rekindling their romance.  However, at the same time, it also shows Michaela getting more and more involved with Gabriel - something that has us both excited and confused in equal parts.

At the beginning of the episode, we see Gabriel (Rome Flynn) desperately trying to reach Michaela, who is still mourning the loss of her best friend, Laurel. Since Laurel disappeared, Michaela's abandonment issues kicked in and she is taking it harder than anybody else in the Keating 5. Enter Asher, as a ray of hope, who tries to convince her that maybe all her worries and concerns about the worst-case scenarios are wrong; he is the one that's actually able to get through to her, breaking down the walls she has built in the wake of Laurel's disappearance.

This leads to Michaela opening up to him about why she is insistent on shutting out Gabriel, and the reason turns out to be the fact that she cheated on Asher with him. It is remarkable how Asher responds to this, with reassurances of her integrity, reminding her that just because she has messed up a relationship in the past, doesn't mean she will do it again. But things take a whole different turn towards the end of the conversation, as the two of them sit at the dining table, eating ice cream and hearing PG-rated sounds of lovemaking from Connor and Oliver upstairs. Somehow this makes Asher remind Michaela that if Oliver was able to look past Connor's many faults, maybe all hope is not lost between the two of them as well. Meaning, he does hope for a rekindling of romance between him and her.

Yet, this is perhaps what drives Michaela to actually reach out to Gabriel and tell him how much she wants him too. Michaela puts her badassery on and tells him if he ever leaves her or breaks up with her without an adult, justified reason, she will chop his penis off and shove it in a trash-can. So sweet as it is that the two of them are a thing now looks like Asher's feelings might prove to be a hindrance in their happily ever after some time.

'How to Get Away with Murder' season 6 airs on Thursdays at 10/9c, only on ABC.
