The ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series spans seven thrilling movies, each delivering heart-pounding action and suspenseful espionage narratives. The franchise begins with the 1996 film ‘Mission: Impossible’, where we witness Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, facing betrayal within his own agency while trying to clear his name. In ‘Mission: Impossible 2’, released in 2000, Hunt battles a rogue agent and a deadly virus while navigating a treacherous love affair. The stakes are raised even higher in ‘Mission: Impossible III’, as Hunt races against time to rescue his kidnapped protégé from a sadistic arms dealer. The adrenaline-fueled action continues in ‘Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol’ (2011), where the IMF team must prevent a nuclear extremist from unleashing global devastation. In ‘Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation’ (2015), Hunt and his allies confront a powerful rogue organization threatening world security. The intense and thrilling journey reaches its peak in ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ (2018), as Hunt races against time to recover stolen plutonium and avert a global catastrophe. With an upcoming installment titled ‘Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One’, fans eagerly anticipate the next chapter in Ethan Hunt's high-stakes adventures.

How many ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies are there in total?

The total number of movies in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise depends on how you count them. In the most comprehensive sense, there are nine movies, but one of them is not considered part of the Tom Cruise era of ‘Mission: Impossible’. This film, titled Mission, ‘Impossible vs The Mob’, was a compilation of two episodes from the original TV show released in 1968 in certain regions but not in the US. Therefore, most people consider there to be eight movies in the series, with two yet to be released. Here is the chronological list of Mission:

·       Mission: Impossible (May 22, 1996)

·       Mission: Impossible 2 (May 24, 2000)

·       Mission: Impossible III (May 5, 2006)

·       Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (December 16, 2011)

·       Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (July 31, 2015)

·       Mission: Impossible – Fallout (July 27, 2018)

·       Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (July 12, 2023)

·       Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (June 28, 2024)

Will there be next installment to ‘Mission: Impossible’ after ‘Dead Reckoning Part 2’?

The future of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise beyond ‘Dead Reckoning – Part Two’ is uncertain. With Tom Cruise aging out of the action movie star role, it remains unclear if the series will continue. Although Jeremy Renner was once considered a potential successor after his appearance in ‘Ghost Protocol’, he did not appear in ‘Fallout’ and is not confirmed for ‘Dead Reckoning – Part One’ either. Paramount, the production company behind the franchise, faces the challenge of carrying on a series so closely associated with its star. However, considering the success of the franchise and the precedent set by James Bond, it is unlikely that Paramount would abandon one of its most lucrative properties. Therefore, while there are currently eight mainline ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies, there is a strong possibility of more films being produced in the future.

'Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part Two' is releasing on July 12.
