Elsie Mogford: Millionaire Steve Mogford's wife found dead at luxury Menorca villa
Elsie Mogford, the wife of the chief of United Utilities, has died while on holiday in Menorca. The 37-year-old had been married to Steve Mogford since 2019 and has two children from her previous marriage. The 65-year-old millionaire water company boss had lost his first wife five years ago due to breast cancer.
As per reports, Elsie died at the couple’s $1.3 million villa on the south of the Spanish island on Tuesday, August 24. The mother of two was of Greek descent. She was reportedly rushed to a hospital in an ambulance, but to no avail as she was pronounced dead at the hospital. However, the cause of death has not been disclosed by the local authorities or by her family.

A family spokesman issued a statement while requesting privacy. It read: “The family of Elsie Mogford announce her death, in hospital in Menorca, on Tuesday 24 August. Elsie was a wonderful, wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend and she will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. The family request privacy at this very sad time.”
One of the family members showed their shock over the sudden demise of Elsie, who recently shared numerous pictures of their holiday on social media, one of which showed her sunbathing on their $2.7 million (£2 million) yacht. The anonymous member told the Mail, “I'm in a state of shock. I don't know many details apart from she was on holiday in Menorca and she died on Tuesday morning. They have a villa over there and all I know is that they called an ambulance. She has two boys and it's so sad for them. She was a very good horse rider and a lovely person. I got on well with her.”
People living near the rich couple’s $2.05 million farmhouse outside Chorley in Lancashire said they saw family and friends getting emotional outside the property on Tuesday. A person said, “It is very quiet around here but there were quite a few people outside the Mogfords' property on Tuesday crying and hugging. It's very sad. The rumor is she had a heart attack, but nobody really knows what has happened.”
Steve has been running United Utilities as its head since 2011 and made $4.03 million in 2020 as part of his salary, bonus, and benefits. The firm, which provides water and waste services to over three million households and businesses in the north-west of England, has regularly been criticized for its high pay packet while ignoring massive water leaks and hosepipe prohibition in hot weather. Before joining the water company, he was with British Aerospace for several years. He also worked at an Italian defense company.
Steve is said to have received his education at Barking Abbey Grammar School in east London and Queen Elizabeth College, part of the University of London. He and Elsie had reportedly divided their summer holidays between spending time at their villa in Menorca and relaxing on their 80ft yacht called the Sea Samphire and is fastened at the Mahon marina on the island.
