CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Jerry Springer, legendary talk show host and former mayor of Cincinnati has died, the family said in a statement. He was 79. Springer reportedly died peacefully in his home on Thursday, April 27, in Chicago. The exact cause of his death hasn't been revealed yet, WLTV confirmed. However, Jene Galvin, Springer's family spokesperson, has revealed that Springer was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, according to The Independent

Springer was famous for his tabloid talk show 'The Jerry Springer Show' which ran for 27 years starting in 1991 to 2018. The show initially focused on politics but later had a complete makeover with outrageous guests who would fight and cover topics on incest and adultery.

He once served as Cincinnati's 56th mayor

Born in London in 1944, Springer's family moved to New York when he was 5 years old. With a law degree in hand, he would later join John F Kennedy's presidential campaign before starting his own political career in 1970.

The following year Springers got elected to Chinchinati Council and served from 1971 to 1974 before unceremoniously resigning from the position due to a Northern Kentucky sex scandal for allegedly soliciting a prostitute as per CBS News. In 1975, a year later, Springer won his seat back.

Springer started journalism career as local newsman and anchor

Later in 1977, he served as Cincinnati's 56th mayor as per WLWT. He also made a solo higher bid for Ohio governor in 1982 which he lost. He then turned to a career in television starting as a news anchor and commentator at WLWT before taking new roles as a talk show host in the early '90s.

“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” Jene Galvin, a lifelong friend and spokesman for the family told the outlet.

'He’s irreplaceable'

“He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on," Galvin added. As per the station, a funeral service and a memorial gathering are currently being planned. 'The Jerry Springer Podcast' and 'Judge Jerry', his courtroom show, have both gained popularity in recent years thanks to Springer.
