'Holiday in the Wild': Release date, plot, trailer, cast and everything you need to know about the Netflix rom-com

This postcard-perfect film brings together Kristin Davis and Rob Lowe on screen, after nearly two decades
PUBLISHED OCT 17, 2019

Ever seen a trailer and heard the voice of Chris Treger from ‘Parks and Recreation' say, "This is literally the best thing I have seen today"? 'Holiday in the Wild' will make you say that.

Not just because it looks like a feelgood, wholesome, Christmassy comedy, but also because it stars Rob Lowe. If happy movies are your jam, then this is one you definitely shouldn't miss.

Release date

'Holiday in the Wild' will premiere on Netflix on November 1.

Plot

Kate Conrad (Kristin Davis), a rich Manhattanite, decides to visit Africa for her "second honeymoon" despite her husband ending their marriage two days before they were supposed to leave. As fate would have it, Kate runs into Derek Holliston (Rob Lowe), a wise and cheeky pilot.

During a detour through Zambia, however, things turn exciting. Kate helps Derek rescue an orphaned, but adorable baby elephant. Together, they nurse him back to health at a local elephant sanctuary, and Kate extends her stay through Christmas time.

The longer she spends in Africa, the more she changes for the better. And perhaps, even falls in love.

Cast

This postcard-perfect film brings together Davis and Lowe, almost two decades after the 1999 miniseries ‘Atomic Train’. Davis, of course, is a pop culture icon, especially for her role as Charlotte in HBO's 'Sex and the City'.

Rob Lowe

Executive producer Rob Lowe of 'The Lowe Files ' speaks onstage during the A+E portion of the 2017 Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on July 28, 2017, in Beverly Hills, California(Getty Images)

Lowe too requires little introduction. Largely considered one of the most good-looking men in Hollywood and television, Lowe is most famous for his character Sam Seaborn in the White House drama 'West Wing'. In more recent times, Lowe has also won hearts with his performance in the mockumentary series 'Parks and Recreation'.

Writer / Director

The romantic comedy is directed by Ernie Barbarash and written by Neal and Tippi Dobrofsky.

Trailer

A thoroughly hassled Davis, reeling from a broken marriage, bumps into Lowe at a restaurant in Zambia, and they immediately get off on the wrong foot. Lowe's sagely advice — "A lot of people come here to get lost, so they can be found again" — does nothing to make things better.

And just when it seems like she is done with him, it turns out, he's her pilot. But he also has a heart of gold. When he spots an injured and orphaned baby elephant in the game reserve, he stops to help and Davis joins him in this unexpected adventure.

Speaking to EW, Davis said the idea for the film originated with her wildlife activism. Davis has been very involved in elephant conservation efforts for over a decade.

In fact, on a 2009 trip to Kenya, she helped rescue an orphaned elephant — much like her character in the Netflix comedy. "My own story is not a romantic comedy," she said, adding "It's just me falling in love with elephants and learning about the poaching crisis and trying to help."
