Spoilers for Season 3 of 'High Seas'

When Netflix's Spanish original, 'High Seas' aka 'Alta Mar', returned for its third season, a few things have changed. The season picks up one-and-a-half years after the events of the first season and our characters are different people. The new season also introduced many new characters, some of whom may stay on for potential future seasons. What happened in the series finale? Will 'High Seas' return for Season 4? Read on to know more details.

This time around, the Villanueva sisters, Eva (Ivana Baquero) and Carolina (Alejandra Onieva) are once again boarding the Barbara de Braganza for a voyage, but a new, more nefarious danger awaits them. Eva is now a successful author, having published her novel, 'Lost Souls', which she wrote while she was aboard the Barbara de Braganza. Meanwhile, Carolina, who is now married to Fernando Fabregas (Eloy Azorín), is trying to break out of her shell. And so, she bought a new ship which will embark on its maiden voyage delivering cargo. Eva is also single seeing as Nicolas Vasquez (Jon Kortajarena) chose to be with his wife instead.

In the new season, before Eva is set to board the Barbara de Braganza, she is approached by Brazilian spy Fabio (Marco Pigossi) — this may or may not be his real name — who asks her for help in finding a dastardly doctor who had developed a deadly virus for the Nazis. Fabio believes that the doctor will be traveling on the Barbara de Braganza as the ship sets sail for Mexico, but he does not know what name the doctor has taken up or what he looks like. He needs Eva's help in accessing passenger records to figure out who the doctor might be so he can arrest him before the ship begins her voyage. Eva and Fabio later realize that the doctor's protege may instead be on the ship. The protege is named Alex Katona, but no one knows the identity of the person.

Meanwhile, in the captain's quarters, after Nicolas was sent to captain Carolina's ship under mysterious circumstances, the new First Officer, Hector Birabent (a new character), and Second Officer Pierre (Daniel Lundh, since Season 1) are up to no good either. They work together to depose Captain Santiago Aguirre (Eduardo Blanco) making him think that he is losing his mind. Another set of mysterious occurrences is that Carolina is kidnapped and sedated, while a woman named Diana -- who looks exactly like her after surgery -- masquerades as Carolina to get the virus for herself and Dr Ayala.

By the final episode, we learn that Hector was working with Alex -- who turned out to be a woman and Eva's maid, Ana. It turns out, Alex had made the virus herself and she did for the sake of vanity. Alex had injected the virus in Diana thinking she was Carolina.

Just when it turns out there is no hope, Nicolas shows up on the Barbara de Braganza and helps Eva and the others free Captain Santiago and capture Alex and Hector. Unfortunately, Diana has been spreading the virus around. So Fabio gets Ayala to make a vaccine serum from Hector's and Alex's blood since it looks like they are immune. When the first serum extracted from Hector's blood is sent to be tested, Diana threatens Dimas's (Ignacio Montes) life. However, the serum did not work and she dies. It turns out Hector is not immune and soon he gets sick. Ayala then takes the blood from Alex and this time the serum proves successful.

Meanwhile, a warship has answered the Barbara de Braganza's SOS call, unfortunately, instead of saving them, the warship begins firing on the ship to ensure that the dangerous virus does not reach land. Nicolas and Eva then do their best to raise a yellow flag to signal to the warship that the virus has been cured. During this time, Alex escapes and as Nicolas and Alex ensue in a tight, Alex stabs the former.

Nicolas dies in Eva's arms as rest of the passengers evacuate. The Barbara de Braganza -- with Nicolas and other victims inside -- sinks to the bottom of the sea.

What does this mean for a potential fourth season? If the show is renewed, we believe Fabio could take Nicolas's place in future storylines. While we did not like Fabio as much as we liked Nicolas, we hope the show expands on his backstory. Perhaps, if we learn more about him, we could grow to like him more. Additionally, with the Barbara de Braganza now destroyed, a new season would mean that it would be set on a new ship -- maybe it should be on Carolina's cargo ship which would be converted to a passenger ship.

'High Seas' Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
