In the wake of pop star Sophie Xeon's death, fans started #HereForCharli on Twitter over the weekend. Turns out that TikTok star Charli D'Amelio thought the hashtag was for her but that simply wasn't true. In an effort to thank her fans, D'Amelio even went on to tweet, "I am looking through the "hereforcharli" hashtag and oh my goodness you are all so sweet to me."

D'Amelio who is a 16-years-old social media star and has 5.2 million followers hijacked a hashtag that was trending for a somber cause. "You have no idea how much your kind words warm my heart i am so lucky to have you all by my side!! i love you bebs," added D'Amelio. The tweet is now deleted, but many took screenshots of it and posted it on Twitter. "IM SCREAMING CHARLI DAMELIO THINKS THE #hereforcharli HASHTAG IS FOR HER," wrote one user with the screenshot of the tweet.

#HereForCharli trend was started on the social media platform by fans of Charli XCX in order to support her after the death of Xeon's, her friend. It wasn't long before fans of Charli XCX found out about the tweet, and they wasted no #hereforcharli was for Charli XCX and not D'Amelio.

Fans of Charli XCX and Sophie defend the hashtag's true intention

"I am so fucking mad right now the #hereforcharli tag was meant for charli xcx since she’s currently mourning sophie’s death bc they were really close friends & collaborators but the fucking tiktok stans made it about charli fucking damelio for whatever reason i hate it her," wrote one user explaining why the hashtag was made in the first place.

Grammy-nominated musician Sophie Xeon died on January 30 after a 'terrible accident' in Athens. Fans tweeted to D'Amelio asking her to realize what she had done when she posted the tweet thinking the hashtag was for her. "Please don’t make the #hereforcharli for @charlidamelio you’re taking away a hashtag for someone who is morning a very close friend and producer to give to a teenager who mistook it for her own. The hashtag is for @charli_xcx make another hashtag for Charli Damelio," wrote one user. Another added, "so mani ch*rli d*melio stans in this hashtag saying "the hashtag was for d*melio first" like read the fucking room one of charli xcx's best friends passed away and you're making it into a competition #hereforcharli"

Now, we don't know if it's because D'Amelio's fans started posting the hashtag that D'Amelio thought it was for her, or the other way around, but either way fans of Charli XCX were not having it. But some did call for peace and focus on the tragedy at hand. "I think that it’s disrespectful that instead of focusing on charli xcx, y’all are wasting your time blaming charli d and her fans and accusing them of hijacking the hashtag when they actually created it. Y’all are blindly accusing them without proof," wrote one user. Others thought it was still quite horrid, with one user writing, "I am disgusted with charli d'amelio's fans. they didnt look at the background history for the hashtag #hereforcharli which was made for @charli_xcx after the death of her friend. charli d'amelio's fans then made their own hashtag #charlihappiness. embarrassing and insensitive."

Others posted pictures of the duo in order to pay tribute. One user wrote, "My favorite picture of sophie and charli xcx together" with what looks to be a sweet image of the artists. Another quoted Charli XCX's thoughts on Sophie tweeting, "“Working with SOPHIE on “Vroom Vroom” was a key moment in realizing myself as a musician, because I felt like I finally found someone who could articulate my ideas sonically. It was like: Wow, you get it, and you get me, and you also make me feel something.” - Charli XCX RIP"
