Henry Ruggs III, a former Raiders wide receiver, was released from jail and has returned to his Las Vegas residence. He is due back in court next week.

The 22-year-old NFL star posted bond on Wednesday, November 3, shortly after making his initial court appearance in Las Vegas. He was released just a day after he crashed his Chevrolet Corvette and killed a woman and her pet dog. A source told the Review-Journal that Ruggs was home by evening and was being monitored electronically under conditions set by a judge. He was ordered held on $150,000 bail earlier in the day, along with the highest level of electronic monitoring if released from custody. Meanwhile, he was also asked to surrender his passport and was prohibited from driving and consuming alcohol or drugs.

Ruggs was traveling at 156 mph about two seconds before the pre-dawn crash on Tuesday, November 2, Chief Deputy District Attorney Eric Bauman said. Investigators found the car had slowed down to 127 mph before the airbags were deployed. Justice of the Peace Joe Bonaventure said he couldn't "recall a speed that high in my career on the bench."

Ruggs, who attended court wearing a neck brace and sitting in a wheelchair, posted a "cash bond" for his release, Las Vegas Justice Court records showed. The woman killed in the crash was identified in a Metropolitan Police Department report released Wednesday as 23-year-old Tina Tintor.

What was the bail amount?

According to the Review-Journal, prosecutors had originally requested a $1 million bail, which Ruggs' defense attorney David Chesnoff called an “excessive” amount. “What we have, your honor, is a young man who has never been in trouble before,” Chesnoff told Judge Bonaventure, who later set the bond at $150,000. It's worth noting that Ruggs had signed a four-year, $16.67 million guaranteed contract in 2020, although it's unclear whether he would receive payment for the remaining 2½ years. The Raiders Twitter account posted on Tuesday night that Ruggs had been released from the team.

Metro officers were seen arriving at Ruggs’ house in the Del Rey Estates community shortly before noon Wednesday. However, they left within 10 minutes. Metro spokesman Misael Parra explained that when someone is under a high-level house arrest, Las Vegas police ensure the person’s residence meets the conditions of release by, for example, checking for weapons when the person is prohibited from owning a gun. Meanwhile, a corrections officer assigned to the case must make regular visits to check compliance. Additionally, the person on house arrest is allowed to leave home for limited reasons such as medical appointments or attorney visits and has a 6 pm curfew, Parra added.

Ruggs' blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was 0.16 percent, twice the legal limit for drivers in Nevada. Meanwhile, a loaded gun was recovered from the driver's side floorboard of his car, Bauman said. Metro records stated that Ruggs was booked into the Clark County Detention Center Tuesday afternoon and is facing charges of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving. Speaking to reporters after Wednesday's court hearing, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson called it a "very tragic and sad day in this community." He added, “A woman lost her life. Another person perhaps lost his career, perhaps (is) going to prison. This was a very, very ugly day, yesterday morning.”

When is he due back in court?

Ruggs' next court appearance is scheduled for November 10.
