Cheek hails from Ramseur, North Carolina and has experienced quite a few hardships in life. His mother died when he was rather young and he was raised by his father. On the show, he even opened up about how he wasn't able to afford over-the-top looks, seeing that apart from drag, he was a gas station worker, who made $9,000 a year.

She, however, chooses to still go by Heidi N Closet, seeing that there is a story to that name. As the queen put it, the name “came from a joke. It started out as a lot of men from my hometown are closeted and they would always try and get my goodies and whatnotries." She said on the show. "I was like, ‘There’s no need to be hiding in the closet.’” She added, referring to men who were still in the closet.
