EVANSVILLE, INDIANA: After conviction on rape and murder charges in a case where two people were killed, an Indiana woman is set to serve a sentence of 65 years behind bars. Heidi Kathleen Carter's sentencing was ordered by judge David Kiely of Vanderburgh County Circuit Court.

The 37-year-old woman was found guilty of six felony counts last month, including three counts of criminal confinement while being armed with a deadly weapon, two counts of aiding, including or causing forcible rape, and one count of murder. With 16 years for each of the confinement charges and 40 years for each of the rape charges, Carter was sentenced to 65 years for murder with all the sentences running concurrently to the murder sentence, reported Law and Crime.

What led to the murders?

On October 19, 2021, a woman and her boyfriend, Tim Ivy, 50, were invited to Carter's home in Evansville. She met the couple on an LGBTQ dating app. The three got engaged in a consensual sexual activity after they took drugs and drank alcohol. However, things took a wrong turn after the enraged entry of Carter's boyfriend, Carrey Hammond. He walked in during the trio's sexual activity, attacked Ivy, and tied the couple with duct tape to abuse them for hours. "The next thing I know there’s a man bursting through the door with a baseball bat attacking us," said the woman while she testified on February 13.

Hammond held the woman at gunpoint and sexually assaulted her after beating and strangling Ivy to death. Carter verbally encouraged Hammond's attack and fuelled his rage. The surviving victim reportedly said that Carter told her boyfriend to "do anything he wants" to her. Later, responding law enforcement officers fatally shot Hammond. Carter helped Hammond in moving Ivy's body to a different room after the body was wrapped in blankets.

'Yes, I was living in sin'

A houskeeper who was hired to clean the home after the murder heard a woman crying. She noticed there was a body after sitting down on what she thought was "a pile of pillows and blankets," reported FOX News. The housekeeper fled the scene as the deranged couple failed to stop her. Hammond then held a handgun-shaped object when the police arrived at the scene who then opened fire and killed him.

"Yes, I was living in sin. But, did I commit any crimes? No. Under the circumstances, I did the best that I could. I’m a victim, too," said Carter at her court appearance. However, before she was handed down the sentence, the court pointed out her "lack of concern that a human life has been lost," according to Law and Crime.
