Thousands of people on Twitter, on Wednesday, August 19, could not stop saying, in all caps, “He did it!”. Who was this “he” and what did he do? The answer is as hilarious as it is absurd, but such is the way of the interwebs, where small, seemingly inconsequential things bring joy to thousands.

The “he” in question is Timothy John Betar, better known as TimTheTatman. Betar is an American Twitch streamer best known for playing popular battle royale games, and he is also what is known as an internet personality. The “it” in question was his ultimate victory over a video game called ‘Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout’.

But why is this victory so important? Betar is by any standards a good gamer. An average of 47,000 viewers per stream and 5.2 million followers on Twitch is a testament to that fact. But his attempts to best ‘Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout’ had so far proven to be a Herculean task. He just couldn’t win, ever since his first game on August 11.

“Fall guys is the hardest game I’ve ever played in my life,” he Tweeted on August 19.

On August 16, he said, “If I don’t get a 👑 in fall guys next week I’ll quit forever…”

His losing streak led to some amount of trolling. Even the official ‘Fall Guys’ account on Twitter added to the trolling. It tweeted on August 18, “My little friend Tim is really struggling on Fall Guys. He used to say things like: ‘it's a kids game’, ‘it's easy’. Now he says things like: ‘My whole life is ruined’, ‘I will never win at this game’, ‘I am very disappointing’, ‘Dude’. F's in the replies please for @timthetatman.”

But all that changed on August 19. Betar over a period of six hours streamed ‘Fall Guys’. During the stream, he came close to winning multiple times, but did not succeed. Finally, six hours into his stream, Betar won his first-ever ‘Fall Guys’ crown by winning a round of Hex-a-Gone, ending his long losing streak.

According to a Verge report, in the two weeks since its release on August 4, ‘Fall Guys’ has become a global sensation, routinely holding a top spot on Twitch. The game presents a simple challenge: be the last jelly bean-shaped avatar left standing out of a group of 60. Verge notes that it’s not that hard to win but it requires a bit of good luck and focus.

After his victory, even the ‘Fall Guys’ Twitter account joined in the celebration along with thousands on Twitter: “We just witnessed one of the biggest gaming moments of our lifetimes. For years to come, people will be asking each other: 'Where were you when @timthetatman got the dub?’”

The victory was such that even ESPN ESports tweeted, “HE DID IT!!!”

Although for many outside the subculture of ‘Fall Guys’ gaming, the trend felt strange. One Twitter user noted, “God I saw ‘He did it’ and ‘He finally did it’ trending and I was like ‘Oh god who did Trump nuke?’”

But most seemed to just want to celebrate this moment of wholesomeness and victory. “The totally insane power of viral games and streaming. The attention on this moment over only 1-week build up surpasses any sporting event I've seen. Good job @FallGuysGame and @timthetatman! HE DID IT,” wrote a Twitter user.
