'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16: Meredith and DeLuca seem to be over as the writers push her toward McWidow
Till now, Andrew DeLuca has been a bit of a docile, graciously sweet doormat. He took the fall for his feisty girlfriend Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and went to jail for her, and stuck by her side during the legal battles. He was the first person Meredith said 'I love you' to after her husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) died. It seemed as if the 'Grey's Anatomy' writers would finally let this romance bloom and not strike it down mercilessly.
Whoops, wishful thinking? Problems began to seep in, a couple of episodes into the sixteenth season. During the court case, an insecure Meredith told DeLuca that they might not 'make it' if she loses her medical license and cannot be a surgeon and he still 'can cut'. A visibly hurt DeLuca decides to take a break from her at the end of the episode, as he feels she doesn't treat him as an equal. Meredith is sorry for this and tries to mend things with him and it seems if they were getting back on track till DeLuca suddenly became an angry and snappish person with everyone wondering whether he suffers from bipolar disorder.
Yes, that happened. DeLuca loses sleep over a patient, whose illness just can't be diagnosed. A worried Meredith sees it taking a toll on him and tries to advise him to take a break, but he's too far gone. Finally, she takes matters into her hands and removes him from the case. It just so happens that his diagnosis is proved right and he yells at Meredith in front of the rest of her co-workers. It doesn't end there. In the next episode, Meredith again tries to advise him from stepping out into the blizzard to get a liver for a patient and he gets angry with her again. He goes without gloves he gets frostbite. Meredith tries to be patient with him but then he crosses the line.
DeLuca's sudden devolvement seems like the perfect opportunity for Meredith to fall for McIrish/ McWidow (as he's more popularly known as), or rather Dr Hayes (Richard Flood). All signs are pointing in that direction, as he is clearly interested in her. This was rather hasty, even for 'Grey's Anatomy' writers. As it seems to be the season of break-ups in the show, DeLuca and Meredith are over, will we see a romance blooming between Meredith and Hayes?
