Beth's brilliance continues to dazzle and in Season 4 Episode 4 called 'Dave', it seems that she has had her biggest brainwave yet. In this episode, we can see why Beth Boland (Christina Hendricks) tells Rio (Manny Montana) that she hated a life of domesticity and can never make another cookie again. Clearly, Beth is one smart cookie, who while stressed and battered by the situation she finds herself in, also enjoys it and gets a high from it.

But while Beth may be smarter than we or the smooth criminals that she works with have given her credit for, is she smart enough to outsmart Rio? Beth in a stroke of brilliance to keep Rio alive, had given Rio Mr Fitzpatrick's (Andrew McCarthy) photo pretending he was Dave, an FBI agent who was after Rio. In one fell swoop, she kept Rio alive, got rid of Fitzpatrick and seemingly secured the witness protection deal being offered to her and the girls which are dependent on Rio being alive.

But as smart as Beth is, Rio always seems to be one step ahead of her. In this case, the quizzical expression on Fitzpatrick's face when Rio calls him Dave before he kills him, has probably also given the game away. Rio tells Beth in his trademark casual way, that Dave, the so-called FBI agent Beth gave him information on, was not just out to put him behind bars, he was out to kill him. Rio makes it clear that he finds this suspicious, all with his cat that got the cream smile, still in place.

Beth says she didn't know the Feds wanted to kill him, maybe they had run out of options because Beth was their only hope of getting any information on Rio. Rio says maybe, but as he walks away, we see that he has understood that Beth has been lying to him.

The episode ends with Dean (Matthew Lillard) looking at a picture of Henderson Nevada, where Beth has told him they may be able to go sooner than he thinks. Beth has been dreaming of going to America's second safest city, near Las Vegas that Dean loves, to start afresh under the witness protection that the FBI has offered her. Beth tells Dean earlier in the episode about a possible move to Nevada, he thinks she's going there with their kids, but she says not to lose faith in her, he may be able to come with them too.

Dean asks Beth what are they supposed to do, just forget all this ever happened. Beth asks him to just hang in there and trust her. But now that Rio seems to have his suspicions raised and probably confirmed that Beth has double-crossed him, will Beth and the girls and Dean get their chance at a fresh start? Or is a life under Rio's thumb the only one they have in store, if they have a life at all.
