Burhan Chowdhury: GoFundMe page started for cancer patient who was shamed by Judge Alexis Krot
A GoFundMe has been launched for a cancer patient after a Michigan judge berated a 72-year-old cancer patient for not maintaining his lawn, for which he was issued a ticket back in August 2021. Judge Alexis Krot was widely condemned for the way she handled the case of Burhan Chowdhury. Chowdhury was levied a $100 fine and was ordered to clean up his yard, which was done before the hearing itself.
Krot is part of a long list of judges whose controversial decisions have been widely criticized. In November 2021, Judge Matthew Murphy was condemned for issuing an eight-year probation sentence to Christopher Belter, who pleaded guilty to raping minors. In a similar case on January 12, Judge Robert Adrian ordered convicted rapist Drew Clinton not to face any jail time, saying prosecutors had failed to prove their case. Towards the end of 2021, Judge Bruce Schroeder came under fire for his handling of the Kyle Rittenhouse trial.

A GoFundMe that has now been launched by Laura Patton for Burhan Chowdhury reads, "I am an oncology nurse who saw the video & am starting this fundraiser to help Burhan Chowdhury with lawn care, home maintenance & bills, & medical bills while he battles cancer. Burhan was fined $100 because his weeds were grown up. His son usually helps his parents but was unable to while he was out of the country. This poor man was struggling to breathe as he explained his situation. It is not the fine that was most hurtful: Judge Alexis Krot berated him, told him he should be ashamed, & told him she would hive him jail time if she could. Any donation will go directly to this gentleman to help him hire the help he needs while he focuses on resting and being with his family." Till the writing of this article, $6,533 USD had been raised of the $7,500 goal.
Krot sits in the 31st District Court in Michigan, where she was elected by the city of Hamtramck in November 2018 as a non-partisan candidate. She won the 2020 re-election unopposed, also as a non-partisan candidate. Krot was appointed to the bench two years prior by then-Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican who left office in 2019. According to the court's website, Krot earned a BSc degree from Tulane University before completing her Juris Doctor from Loyola University. She also has an MBA from the University of Detroit Mercy. Krot has vast experience in criminal and family law, and has served as the assistant city attorney for the City of Hamtramck.
