'For All Mankind' Season 1: It's only a matter of time before US and Soviet Union turn the Moon a battlefield

Both the Soviets and the Americans on the show are so terrified of the other country setting up weapons in space that it's almost inevitable that they will break the Outer Space Treaty and begin putting nukes on the Moon.

The main reason why no one has ever built a working Death Star (besides the monumental cost, of course) is because it is a violation of certain agreements, mainly the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, that was created to ensure we humans don't take our wars off-planet and turn the whole universe into our personal battleground. So far, those treaties have managed to ensure peaceful space exploration in the real world but in the world of 'For All Mankind', the situation in space is getting tenser by the minute.

Thanks to the Soviet Moon landing turning the Space Race into the government's number one priority, there's a lot more political and military influence on NASA in 'For All Mankind' and it's already causing trouble. In 'For All Mankind' Episode 6 'Home Again', it's revealed that the administrators at NASA changed one of the contractors supplying parts for their rocket ships at the instructions of the President himself, and as a consequence caused the deaths of a dozen men.

While that's horrifying in itself, that disaster is nothing compared to what could happen if the show's Space Race continues along its current path. As of Episode 6, both the Soviet Union and the USA have lunar bases in close proximity to each other and there are hints that the Soviets may already have weapons on the Moon.

Both the Soviets and the Americans on the show are so terrified of the other country setting up weapons in space that it's almost inevitable that they will break the Outer Space Treaty and begin putting nukes on the Moon. When they do, it will most certainly lead to widespread destruction and loss of life, not to mention it would mean that the stain of humanity's political conflicts will have been extended beyond the surface of the Earth.

'For All Mankind' Season 1 Episode 7 'Hi Bob' will land on Apple TV+ on November 29.
