Jay Z's speech during Grammys 2024 was reminiscent of Kanye West's infamous VMA snub against Taylor Swift

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: At the Grammy Awards 2024, JAY-Z, the artist behind "Empire State of Mind," criticized the Grammys for 'never awarding' his wife, Beyonce Knowles, the coveted 'Album of the Year'. The rapper, during his acceptance speech for the Dr Dre Global Impact Award, drew parallels to the 2009 VMA scandal involving Kanye West and Taylor Swift by emphasizing that his wife was genuinely overlooked, addressing the apparent snub.

He highlighted Beyonce's historic 32 Grammy wins the previous year and her lack of Album of the Year recognition, expressing the sentiment that she deserved more acknowledgment at the Grammys. This moment echoed the VMA incident when Kanye interrupted Taylor acceptance speech, stating that Beyonce deserved the award, indicating a sense of history repeating itself in terms of Beyonce being snubbed at major award shows.

Looking at his wife, who was in the audience, Jay-Z said, “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has the most Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that: The most Grammys. Never won album of the year. That doesn’t work. Some of you gonna go home and feel like you’ve been robbed. Some of you may get robbed. Some of you don’t belong in the category."

The rapper continued by revealing that he tends to speak the truth when nervous. “When I get nervous I tell the truth,” he added. However, Jay-Z's recent comments at the Grammys have brought attention to a pattern that has emerged around Beyoncé's recognition in the music industry. It seems that whenever Beyoncé is recognized for her achievements, there are often controversies or moments where her accomplishments are overshadowed.

The internet echoed sentiments, sharing their views on Beyonce being unrecognized. "But that was Jay’s and everyone with sense’s argument. Hate Beyonce all you want but if they can snub HER cause of misogynoir, what do you think they’re gonna do to the Szas and Victoria Monets?," said a user on X. "Speaking of #GRAMMYs snubs, Beyonce naming her album Lemonade was so iconic. She looked at Jay and everything he put her through and said, when someone gives you lemons, you make lemonade, and then put her entire heart into one of the greatest albums of our generation," added another. To some, Kanye was still made them furious. "Am I the only one who thought that JayZ's comment abt Beyonce never winning album of year felt like Kanye getting up on the stage when Taylor won one of her first Grammys. Both of them made me furious. It felt just like the Kanye moment, a snub against Taylor in praise of Big B."

Netizens were obviously divided as the debate evolved around their favorite stars. "love Taylor but… the same way we knew it’d be her, we had the same feelings when Beyoncé was nominated… difference is she never got it. ofc Taylor will. they’ll never snub her. #justsayin." "Kanye spoke up for his woman first… But he got called crazy. The selective outrage and who’s message ya’ll choose to uplift based on industry popularity is hilarious." Others pointed out the gender bias at the Grammys. "I’m all for gender equality and equal pay but articles about the Grammy’s only having 1 female win a main award are ridiculous. Adele, Beyoncé and Alicia Keys have won 52 Grammy’s between them recently! That apparently doesn’t count!" "So Jay-Z and Kanye West are best mates again? At least she was able to finish this time. It’s funny, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé literally show up for each other. It is toxic masculinity that perpetuates the wicked female narrative."

Does Beyonce have nominations in Grammy 2024?

Beyonce, despite not receiving any Grammy nominations this year, made a low-key appearance at the ceremony alongside her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, and husband Jay-Z, who was honored with the Global Impact Award. The family chose not to walk the red carpet and instead joined the audience later in the show.

In the previous year, Beyonce had received nine nominations across various categories, including the coveted General Field categories of Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. In the 2023 Grammy Awards, she is nominated in the fields of Dance/Electronic Music, General Field, R&B, and Music for Visual Media.

What Grammy award did Blue Ivy receive?

In 2021, Blue Ivy Carter made history as the second-youngest Grammy winner alongside Beyonce, clinching the Best Music Video award for 'Brown Skin Girl.' The track, featured in the visual album 'Black Is King' on Disney+, held sentimental significance for Beyonce in 2020. On May 26, during the Renaissance World Tour in Paris, fans were delighted to witness Blue Ivy being spotted for the first time on stage alongside her mom, Beyoncé. The young talent showcased impressive choreography, dancing to Beyoncé's songs 'My Power' and 'Black Parade.'

What is Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s scandal?

Beyonce and Jay Z faced marital challenges when rumors of Jay Z's alleged infidelity surfaced in 2014. The speculation pointed towards Rachel Roy, who later became the target of online bullying. Beyonce referenced her as 'Becky with the good hair' in her song 'Sorry,' alluding to the woman Jay Z may have cheated on her with.

Jay-Z later revealed that he and Beyonce used their songs as a form of therapy to address and navigate through the challenges stemming from his infidelity. The following year, the couple announced the arrival of their twins, Sir and Rumi. Soon after, Jay-Z came out to say that he had indeed cheated on his wife and opened up about how they were dealing with it. Talking about the consequences of his cheating, he mentioned: "The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself.”
