California Rep. Eric Swalwell was roasted on social media after he tweeted about his four-year-old child's reaction to the mass shooting at the Tops Supermarket store in Buffalo, New York.

The Democrat leader, 41, took to Twitter on Monday, May 16, and claimed his son asked him about the daytime massacre that claimed 10 lives. "My 4-year-old just FaceTimed to ask what I’m doing to “help the people in Buffalo” and “why did the bad man do this?” Absolutely gutting. This cannot be his normal. It’s time to BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS. #EndGunViolence," Swalwell tweeted on Monday, May 16.

Swalwell, who represents California's 15th congressional district, was subsequently mocked on social media, with many sharing parodies of his post. "My 4-year-old non-binary, triple amputee, trans-racial child just FaceTimed me and told me you’re fucking annoying," political commentator Blaire White responded. "My newborn, upon exiting the womb, looked up at me with her barely-open eyes and asked why politicians feel the need to create fictional stories about their offspring to make bad points," conservative pundit Allie Beth Stuckey added.

"My three-year-old just emailed me and asked why I bought him “a toy gun that mimics its deadly counterpart.” He told me our family was “normalizing violence.” He attached a video of himself tossing it in the trash. Heart-wrenching. It’s time to ban toy guns, too," Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon chimed in. "My 4-year-old just FaceTimed to ask “why did US politicians vote to give Ukraine 40 billion dollars while we face record inflation and baby formula shortages?” Absolutely gutting. This cannot be normal. It's time to JAIL TREASONOUS POLITICIANS LIKE @RepSwalwell," the official Twitter account for the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire wrote.

"My 5-year-old just FaceTimed to ask, 'why would the bad man let his 4-year-old watch news about a mass murder incident?' Absolutely gutted," political strategist Seth Weathers commented. "My 4-year-old FaceTimed me to ask why US representatives who sleep with Chinese spies aren't held accountable. Absolutely gutting. This cannot be normal but it is because there are no consequences anymore for the powerful in this nation. #EndSexWithChineseSpies," podcaster Keith Malinak offered.

"Lol, that’s a lie. And also, no. He attacked Buffalo specifically because they have a law that states you can’t have more than 10 rounds in a mag. You and other political idiots actually made Buffalo a target by disarming them. You all assisted in those murders," NFL wide receiver T.J. Moe alleged.

One Twitter user said while they were a fan of Swalwell, he wasn't buying the politician's claim. Responding to the criticism, the Democrat shared a screenshot of a Facebook conversation about his son watching the news. "Yeah cause I have time to make up sh*t my 4-year-old says," he wrote.

The California congressman later added, "I love the 'no 4-year-old would ask this' takes. You're in absolute denial if you think our kids aren't watching the horrors we are allowing."

Buffalo authorities identified 18-year-old Payton Gendron as the prime suspect behind the grocery store shooting on Saturday, May 14. The teenager, who is remanded in custody, allegedly shared a 180-page manifesto online and police believe the attack was racially motivated. The shooter was reportedly wearing tactical gear and used an assault-style weapon to shoot several people on the supermarket's premises, the Erie County District Attorney's Office said in a release. Gendron is said to have livestreamed the shooting on the streaming platform Twitch.
