Eric Adams wants MORE power for police, slams Dems for backing BLM only when cops are shooters
New York Mayor Eric Adams slammed Democrats for supporting Black Lives Matter only when those behind the killings are cops. The Mayor's comments came while speaking with host Anderson Cooper on CBS' 60 Minutes.
"Democrats don't like talking about intervention. But we have to lean into the discomfort of the immediate things we must do. Because you can't say Black Lives Matter when a police officer shoots a young person, but does that black life matter when a 12-year-old baby was shot?" asked the 61-year-old. When asked why Democrats don't like talking about intervention, the NYC Mayor said, "Because when you talk about intervention, you have to use the term of giving police officers the tools to deal with violence right now."

"They have allowed Rudy Giuliani to hijack something that the overwhelming number of people of color want. They will tell you, 'We want our police. We don't want our police to be abusive.' And that is the balance that I know we can do in this, in this city," Adams added.
The Mayor's comments sparked a debate on Twitter. One user wrote, "I agree with Adams on this. Make a fair, valid and necessary point. #60Minutes." Another tweeted, "Yes, they should. If black lives truly matter, shouldn't that include all black lives lost, whether by cop, or someone who looks like them? And to be clear, the police should be held to a far higher standard than some criminal shooting in rage...but death is death."

A third added, "Cooper your sense of true journalism and interviewing is so completely twisted with bias that you miss asking the real questions." A fourth chimed in, "Democrats I know want our police and don't want them to be abusive, too. Action needs to be taken to help with gun control and ways to police (de-escalating situations training, traffic violations that could be handled thru mailing the violation, etc.) that reduce bad outcomes."

On being asked about the city's continuously rising crime rate and the multiple subway incidents, Adams replied, "We've moved 1,800 guns off the streets of our city since I've been elected. 1,800. And so we're putting in place the foundation of dealing with the immediate needs of violence, but we're also stopping the pipeline that causes children to get involved in violence."
NYC Mayor Eric Adams says he has a plan to turn around the city after COVID upended New Yorkers’ lives and with major crime up 43% from last year. The mayor doesn’t think the recent subway shooting means the city is headed in the wrong direction. https://t.co/bEi6GgKPGt pic.twitter.com/eGoIRH7bqF

When Cooper asked about the mask mandate no longer being enforced on planes, trains, and public transportation, Adams said, "Yes, I think it's a huge mistake not to require. We're still requiring it in our subway system and on our buses."
