Who runs Envigo? 4,000 abused Beagles freed from HORRIFIC research facility in Virginia
CUMBERLAND, VIRGINIA: Nearly 4,000 Beagles are in the process of being rescued from their alleged abuser as the Department of Justice and the Humane Society of the United States are removing them from the Envigo breeding and research facility in Virginia's Cumberland. The step was taken after it was discovered that the facility, which claims to have “a company-wide animal welfare policy that defines and drives the standards for our animal care,” had breached multiple “federal regulations, leaving the beagles underfed, ill, injured and, in some cases, dead” in the past few years.
Initially, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Office of Inspector General, and other law enforcement agencies reportedly freed 145 dogs and puppies, who were in “acute distress”, from the facility after getting a federal search warrant. Later, a federal judge in the Western District of Virginia permitted them to rescue around 4,000 beagles from the facility. The facility has been given 60 days to remove the canines from the facility and provide them with new homes.

Reports said that Envigo is being cooperative in the process. In June, Inotiv, Inc, which is Envigo’s parent company, said that it plans “the closure of two Envigo RMS (“Envigo”) facilities in Virginia: a purpose-bred canine facility in Cumberland and a rodent breeding facility in Dublin as part of restructuring activities.”
In a July 7 statement, the Humane Society of the United States said, “At this time, we are connecting with our shelter and rescue partners and preparing to take on the monumental process of securing placement for these dogs. The transfer plan was jointly submitted to the Court for approval by Envigo, the Department of Justice, and the Humane Society of the United States. Now that the Court has approved the joint transfer plan, our partners and we are preparing to move quickly to place these beagles in loving homes.”
Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, a Virginia-based non-profit, is also helping in the rescue operation. On its Facebook page, the organization wrote, “This will be one of the largest efforts ever for dogs. We are thrilled to be an ongoing part of this historic victory for these dogs. By next week, we will begin moving dogs off the premises and Homeward Trails once again will plan to take dogs into our program and assist with getting them to partner groups. We are looking for fosters and adopters for these dogs as well as donations to offset our costs of transporting and vetting them!”
The non-profit also said in the post, "We are ALSO looking for fosters who will foster the following:
-Pregnant mom
-Mom with nursing puppies
-Adult Beagle
Please email me at info@homewardtrails.org with Subject Line: I CAN FOSTER A BEAGLE (and then please indicate what type you can foster (options above).
PLEASE help us get these dogs the lives they so deserve."
