Ellen DeGeneres slammed for saying mansion feels like jail during lockdown: 'That's crazy insensitive'
Talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres has been slammed after she compared her isolation mansion to a "jail".
While on a new episode of Ellen's home edition, she insisted that her home feels like a prison, her listeners disapproved of her comments. Many people took to Twitter to call out Ellen for her tone-deaf and insensitive remarks.
Variety's Caroline Framke said, "What a great look for Ellen as thousands of people sit in actual jail cells just hoping for the best without soap and basic protections." Ellen has been in self-isolation along with her wife Portia de Rossi and joked how isolation has been the perfect opportunity to "really get to know each other."
She jokingly asked her viewers, "It’s nice, actually. Because we get to spend time together and talk and really get to know each other. Did you know that she was Australian?" Shortly after, Ellen shared, "This is like being in jail, is what it is. Mostly because I’ve been the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay."
One upset user commented saying, "Ellen you quarantining in your mansion in designer sweats is nothing like prison," while another added, "Yes very much like jail, except for the part where you still have your multimillion-dollar home and your voting rights."
A third shared, "This is not even funny. Her mansion is bigger than most Count Jails. She is eating great food made by her staff and is being cared for. Those who are incarcerated have to sleep with hundreds in cramped spaces. Please learn about what you are joking about."
"That's crazy insensitive, especially now as it's a terrifying time to be locked up. We think they don't give give af about our health out here, imagine being caged up in forced labor with all this. And that gay joke even more stupid considering much of prison sex is rape," a fourth user chimed in.
Ellen also shared, "Thanks for not being here. This is crazy. I wasn’t supposed to be doing my show from my house until next season." She went on to applaud health care workers who were at the frontline of the coronavirus crisis.
"Today I am filming this in my living room because it has the best light and sound and all the other rooms in my house are filled with toilet paper," she shared jokingly.
We had previously reported that the talk show host uploaded a video on her YouTube page and decided to give some words of encouragement to her fans. She even managed to make people laugh at the end but she wanted an important message to be conveyed and that was to make sure that everyone stays indoors and takes care of them.
Fans were quick to thank her for her words of encouragement and bringing a dose of laughter as they stay isolated. "Ellen, you keep me sane...and if you knew me you would find that it is not an easy thing to do. Thank you!" shared a fan.
