"Rocked and shocked to the core": Mom rattled after 81-year-old man tried to buy her 8-year-old daughter for $200k at Walmart
Officials on Monday identified the suspect as 81-year-old Hellmuth Kolb and booked him into Volusia County Jail on September 29.
An elderly man allegedly attempted to purchase an 8-year-old girl from her mother for $200,000 at a Walmart store in Port Orange, Florida, according to police reports. Officials on Monday identified the suspect as 81-year-old Hellmuth Kolb and booked him into Volusia County Jail on September 29 after the mother, Tracy Nigh, alerted the authorities about the incident. According to Orlando’s WKMG-TV, the suspect was charged with battery and false imprisonment.
According to police, Kolb approached the mother and her daughter while they were sitting on a bench inside Walmart on Dunlawton Avenue on Friday. The suspect initially asked Nigh if she were married and then turned his attention to the child and allegedly asked the mother if she would accept money in exchange for her daughter.
“The first amount was $100,000, the second amount was $150,000 and then the final amount was $200,000," Nigh said. “I then said ‘no, we have to go,'" she said, according to Newsweek. As the duo made an attempt to leave, Kolb grabbed the girl's arm and kissed her on the wrist. The mother then rushed to Walmart security and told them what had happened.
Her account was confirmed after Kolb was caught on CCTV at the scene approaching the mother-daughter duo. Investigators said that the suspect was identified through his credit card transactions and social media. According to the Associated Press report, at least one other woman had detailed similar allegations against Kolb.
The mother took to Facebook shortly after the incident and said that she was pressing charges against the man: "Shook, rocked and shocked to the core. A man at the Port Orange Walmart offered me 200k for my child today. Grabbed her by the arm and kissed her wrist. My 8-year-old little girl!!!! We are pressing charges."
"Be careful out there women and men with your daughters, wives and the all the women in your life, please! He asked me where my husband is and laughed after I told him he’s at work," Nigh wrote.
She also added: "So scary I don’t even know what to say. Still in shock but need to keep my daughter's emotional state well right now.”
The suspect's neighbor, Cliff Sistrunk, reportedly said that he was married and has been released from prison after he paid bond.
