'DWTS Juniors' semifinals: Mackenzie Ziegler, Sage Rosen emerge as dark horses. Could they win this season?
In a shocking turn of events, Mackenzie emerged to be the highest scoring contestants out of the remaining four participants in the semifinals, and that is saying something
The debut season of ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars: Juniors' aired its semifinal Sunday night and if there's one thing for sure, it was the whole episode was packed with surprises. And, one brilliant performance after the other aside; in a shockingly great turn of events, Mackenzie Ziegler emerged to be the highest scoring contestants out of the remaining four participants in the semifinals, and that is saying something, because competing against her were some of the strongest, most consistent performers in the debut season of the kids' version of the popular dance reality show.
For Sunday's night's episode, the four semi-finalists - Sky Brown, Ariana Greenblatt, Miles Brown, and Mackenzie - had to present two rounds of dances. The first was a regular couple’s dance and the second was a Dance Duo, where the couples were to split off into two teams in which the winner would accrue additional judges’ scores. For their first dance, Mackenzie and her dance-partner Sage Rosen performed a Pasodoble to “The Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga.
Mackenzie - who also happens to be the sister of Sia music video prodigy, Maddie Ziegler - has had some prior experience in dance, but sadly that hadn't worked to her advantage much in the show so far. Things did a total turn around on the latest episode as Mackenzie presented just the right amount of fierceness you would expect in a Pasodoble. Let's add to that the spectacular usage of their prop for the night - a cape!
The performance was sharp and intense enough to drive the judges insane as they handed out their solid 10s for the night. Mentored by original DWTS pro, Gleb Savchenko, the duo earned their first ever perfect score of this season i.e. 30 out of 30 for their routine couple dance right away! “That was absolutely unreal … I felt like you were in control the whole time,” judge Mandy Moore exclaimed, as Adam Rippon resonated with similar feelings, screaming out in awe. As for fellow judge Val Chmerkovskiy, he remarked Mackenzie “tastefully” broke the rules with her dance!
Mackenzie showed equally stellar skills in her and Sage's group performance with Miles and his dance-partner, Rylee Arnold. The four of them performed a Samba-Jazz Fusion to “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus and it was quite the party indeed! The performance had pretty much everything Mackenzie's performances this season had lacked so far. From the stairs of the ballroom floor, it was all dance and no fillers, which the judges particularly seemed to love.
And, that makes us think maybe this remarkable progress will show in the upcoming big finale too? While it was shocking to see one of the most consisted performers, Greenblatt, score a spot right at the bottom of the scoreboard, fans couldn't be happier or prouder of Mackenzie's success and that's huge.
