Justine Johnson: Drug-addict mom says SpongeBob told her to butcher 3-year-old daughter
IOSCO COUNTY, MICHIGAN: A drug-addict and mother, Justine Johnson, 22, was charged with killing her own three-year-old daughter. She has claimed that she was watching SpongeBob on her TV and the cartoon character told her to kill her child or face death herself.
The mother was accused of stabbing her daughter Sutton Mosser to death on September 16, two days after the child’s third birthday. She placed her body into a black trash bag after ingesting heroin. Child Protective Services investigator Ryan Eberline testified in an initial investigation of the 22-year-old mother on Friday, February 4. Justine Johnson is charged with first-degree child abuse and the offense of murder related to the September 16 death of Sutton Mosser.

The toddler’s body was discovered in a trash bag in the Oscoda Township home by Justine Johnson's teenage brother. He made the grisly discovery when he found a human foot sticking out of garbage bag. The girl’s mother told an investigator that she had the SpongeBob hallucination after taking drugs. On the night of the child’s death, Johnson left her home that she shared with her two brothers. Her brothers were also out at the time. Her older brother, Knelsey, who had left for work earlier returned around 2:30 pm and asked the younger brother where Sutton and his sister were.
The younger brother, a teenager, who had seen Johnson taking drugs earlier in the day, then went outside to check on her sister and the toddler. This was when he found the trash bag with the child's foot sticking out, he testified in court. "There was like a foot sticking out of the bag,' he said. "I ran up and told Knesley, 'There's a foot in a bag.' He didn't believe me. He thought I was joking."
The two brothers called the police and reported the crime. While, investigating police found bloodstains on a hallway closet door, and on couches in the living room and in a bedroom. Three knives were also found at the crime scene. The infant had stab injuries to her neck, chest, and abdomen. The 3-year-old girl's body was draped in a comforter inside and put inside the trash bag.
Investigator Eberline told in court that Johnson told him she tried committing suicide in her own apartment. “The conversation was very pieced out,” Eberline said in court. “We would review things and go back to those things. Overall, the conversation, from what I could conclude, was that near the date of the 16th she had left her mother’s house walking and passed out in the graveyard.”
“She told me that she didn’t remember the specifics of what happened at the time of what happened to Sutton, that she was experiencing hallucinations due to heroin withdrawal and not sleeping for approximately two weeks,” Eberline said. “She was getting hallucinations from the TV that had instructed her to take her daughter’s life or they would kill her. It was SpongeBob (Squarepants) who was saying these things on the TV. If she didn’t do what she did to her daughter, they would kill her. She said she was afraid for her life and she had lost her mind.”
