Fauci said the US could face another Covid-19 wave due to 'waning immunity to Omicron variant' after his own battle with the virus

White House pandemic advisor Dr Anthony Fauci returned to public duties, warning that the country could face a new viral surge due to "waning immunity", following his own bout with Covid-19. Two weeks after his last public appearance in late June, Fauci appeared on MSNBC and joined a White House press briefing by videoconference to warn about the spread of the BA.5 variant, a subvariant of the Omicron strain on Tuesday, July 12.

Fauci, 81, urged Americans to get vaccine booster shots and stated that health officials are now recommending that people wear masks in indoor group settings. He had been hospitalized for several weeks after contracting Covid-19 last month, but he appears to have fully recovered. On June 14, he tested positive for the virus for the first time and appeared to recover after taking the antiviral pill Paxlovid. However, on June 28, he revealed that his symptoms had returned while speaking remotely at the Foreign Policy Global Health Forum. It was his last public outing until this week.

During the video conferencing on Tuesday, Fauci mentioned that vaccines and boosters were the key weapons in fighting rising infections, and downplayed the notion that new restrictions or mandates would be imposed on Americans if cases soar once again. "We're not talking mandating anything, but we're saying recommending people when in indoor congregate settings to wear a mask", he said. "Those are simple, doable things that can help prevent us from having even more of a problem than we're having right now", he said on MSNBC. ''Well, it's something we absolutely need to take seriously. It has a transmission advantage over the prior variants that were dominant,'' he added.

Soon after Fauci warned people about Covid's resurgence and the second booster shot advice, social media users started trolling him. "Dr Fauci warns Covid is coming back. For the mid-terms no doubt", a user wrote.

"Imagine a world where fact-checkers actually checked facts. Hunter Biden and Anthony Fauci might be sharing a cell right now... #ProtectedSpecies #MediaSilence", another user wrote.

A user tweeted, "I always say the same thing. There shouldn’t be a mandate on vaccination. Anthony Fauci didn’t know there are asymptomatic carriers who can transmit the virus. We cannot blame Anthony Fauci for the Covid-19 pandemic if the virus never existed in Nature before".
