Why did Trump call Mitch McConnell 'dour, sullen political hack'? Internet wonders if he knows what 'dour' means

McConnell plans to not speak to Trump again because of the ex-president's role in inciting the Capitol riots and his 'lack of leadership in responding to the insurrection'

Former President Donald Trump issued a statement through his Save America leadership PAC on Tuesday, February 16, and the one thing that stood out is what he had to say about his former ally and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. It has become public news that the Senate Republican had voted to acquit Trump during his historic second impeachment trial that saw him facing charges of inciting insurrection on the US Capitol on January 6.

However, later, McConnel did hold Trump responsible for his actions when it came to the riots. On February 13, McConnel said, "There is no question — none — that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. The people that stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president."

He added, "And having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories and reckless hyperbole."

What did Trump's statement say?

The former President called McConnel a "dour, sullen, unsmiling political hack" and further stated that "if Republican Senators stay with him, they will not win again," according to a report by The Business Insider. Trump added, "The Democrats and Chuck Schumer play McConnell like a fiddle — they never had it so good — and they want to keep it that way! We know our America First agenda is a winner, not McConnell's Beltway First agenda or Biden's America Last."

Interestingly, the statement had initially been a lot worse as The New York Times reported that Trump had drafted a version of the statement that was "nastier" and saw him make fun of McConnell for "having too many chins" — this though didn't go public because his advisors convinced him to drop it.

Politico too reported the same news. The publication revealed that a person "familiar with the crafting of the statement" said, "there was also a lot of repetitive stuff and definitely something about him having too many chins but not enough smarts."

Senior reporter Eli Yokley tweeted Trump's statement writing, "Donald Trump just put out a very long statement through his "Save America PAC" attacking @LeaderMcConnell. The lede: 'The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political 'leaders' like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm.'

Trump's statement also called out McConnell for the "Georgia disaster", which he said happened because the Senator had not supported higher stimulus checks for the pandemic in the relief bill that had passed in Congress in December. Trump wrote, "McConnell matched the Democrat offer of $2,000 stimulus checks with $600. How does that work? It became the Democrats' principal advertisement, and a big winner for them it was."

He also dissed the Senator for not being "grateful" for his endorsement during his 2020 Senate race, writing, "My only regret is that McConnell 'begged' for my strong support and endorsement before the great people of Kentucky in the 2020 election, and I gave it to him. He went from one point down to 20 points up and won. How quickly he forgets."

It was also reported that McConnell plans to not speak to Trump again, because of the ex-president's role in inciting the Capitol riots and his "lack of leadership in responding to the insurrection."

Internet drags Trump for vocabulary

While this was a serious statement made by the former president, users couldn't help but mock Trump for the words he used to diss the senator. "The clearest thing about the Trump and McConnell feud is that there's NO WAY Trump knows what the word 'dour' means," wrote one user.

Another added, "There is no way Donald Trump knows what the word 'dour' means. That jabbering boob thought there were airports during the revolution." Yet another tweeted, "The chances of Trump having dour and sullen in his vocabulary are the same as the chances of him having lettuce and broccoli in his fridge."

Some users just took to the social media channel to tweet the words "dour, sullen, unsmiling political hack" and post a picture of Trump mocking him.

Many also refused to believe that Trump had written the statement alone or that he had at all. "Yeah, after seeing a blurb containing ’dour’, ‘sullen’ and ‘espouse’ I don’t need to read the statement to know that Trump didn’t write it," tweeted one user. Another added, "The use of 'dour' & 'sullen' are proofs that Trump didn't write the statement himself." A user noted, "Donald Trump calling anyone sullen and dour is frankly, hilarious."
