WASHINGTON, DC: Israel has reportedly issued an unprecedented and controversial mandate for more than one million people living in northern Gaza to evacuate their homes within 24 hours, sparking concerns of a potential Israeli ground offensive aimed at eradicating Hamas, the Palestinian militant group.

The directive has created a sense of panic among civilians and aid workers in the region, who are already grappling with the consequences of Israeli airstrikes and a prolonged blockade. The United Nations voiced its alarm, stating that such a massive evacuation would have severe and devastating humanitarian consequences.

Hamas, in the midst of this escalating tension, has claimed that at least 13 Israeli and foreign hostages, held in northern Gaza, have been killed due to Israeli airstrikes over the past 24 hours.

Simultaneously, Hamas operatives fired hundreds of rockets towards Israel on October 13, further intensifying the situation.

The armed wing of Hamas revealed that "thirteen prisoners... including foreigners" lost their lives as a result of Israeli fighter jet strikes, CNN reported.

Israel's evacuation directive

The order to evacuate the northern part of Gaza was directly issued by Israel's military on a Friday morning, instructing the 1.1 million residents living north of an area known as Wadi Gaza to move southward, effectively requiring the entire population of Gaza City and its surrounding areas to flee their homes.

The United Nations, however, has expressed strong reservations about the feasibility and consequences of such a mass evacuation, given the densely populated and resource-deprived conditions in Gaza.

The Gaza Strip is home to approximately 2.3 million people, and it's one of the most densely populated regions globally, confined within an area that is just 25 miles long and 7 miles wide. Even before the current crisis, Gaza was dealing with severe challenges, including power shortages, food and water scarcity, and overwhelmed healthcare facilities.

Israel carried out a series of airstrikes that resulted in over 1,530 casualties in Gaza, while imposing restrictions on essential resources, in response to previous attacks by Hamas militants that claimed the lives of over 1,300 people in Israel.

Israel's directive to evacuate comes seven days after Hamas launched an attack on Israel from Gaza, claiming that Hamas terrorists were using tunnels beneath the city. In response, a senior Hamas official dismissed the evacuation order as "fake propaganda" and urged Palestinians to remain in their homes, encouraging them not to "fall for it."

The Hamas Authority for Refugee Affairs also called on residents in the northern part of the territory to stand firm against what they described as a "psychological war waged by the occupation."

The flurry of evacuation directives has been widely interpreted as a signal of an impending Israeli ground offensive, although the Israeli military has yet to officially confirm this decision.

A ground offensive would represent a significant escalation in response to Hamas's attack and could result in a higher number of casualties on both sides, as Israeli soldiers conduct house-to-house searches for Hamas terrorists.

Israeli military's assurances and challenges

The Israeli military emphasized that the evacuation is for the safety of Gaza City residents, warning them to stay away from security fences and distance themselves from Hamas members who may be using them as "human shields." They reassured that they would operate with significant force in Gaza City while making every effort to avoid harming civilians.

The United Nations received a similar directive from the Israeli military shortly before midnight, giving the 1.1 million civilians of northern Gaza 24 hours to relocate to the south. UN officials stress that such a large-scale evacuation would inevitably result in catastrophic humanitarian consequences.

"The UN considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences," spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. "The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation."

Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said the evacuations were a "humanitarian step." "The IDF calls for the evacuation of all civilians from Gaza City from their homes southwards for their own safety and protection and to move to the area south of the River Gaza," he said in a video update on Friday.

"The Hamas terrorist organisation waged a war against the state of Israel and Gaza City is an area where military operations are taking place," he continued. "This evacuation is for your own safety. You will be able to return to Gaza City only when another announcement permitting it is made," Conricus added.

Social media reactions

However, the harrowing situation has ignited outrage and intense discussions on social media, with many expressing concern and making urgent calls to end the conflict.

"1.1m inhabitants in 24h. That's impossible," one posted on X.

"But they don’t have electricity, no? How can they get the announcements to evacuate or stay?" another wondered.

"STOP THE GAZA GENOCIDE NOW!!" someone else reacted.

"Breaks my heart," another lamented.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to "crush" Hamas following their incursion into the country's south, which resulted in significant casualties, including women and children.
