MICHIGAN, DETROIT: Detroit Police has released a person of interest in the brutal murder of renowned neurosurgeon Devon Hoover, who was shot dead in his stately home. The 53-year-old Hoover was found wrapped in a plastic sheet and stuffed in a crawl space of an attic on April 23, when Detroit police did a wellness check at his home on the 100 block of West Boston in Detroit's Boston-Edison neighborhood.

On Tuesday, May 2, the Detroit Police Department announced that the person of interest in Hoover’s death has been released from police custody. “We can confirm that the person of interest taken into custody on April 28 has been discharged following prosecutorial review,” Detroit Police announced in a statement, as per Law and Crime. “Homicide personnel will continue to investigate the information in its possession and follow up on any leads it receives,” the statement added.

Why was the individual arrested?

Detroit Police Chief James White stated that the person was arrested on Friday, April 28 on charges unrelated to the killing. The chief remained silent on the unrelated warrant and refused to identify the suspect by name. However, he stated that investigators were confident the person of interest “knows something about what occurred” two weekends ago. “We’re confident that the person has information on what transpired,” Chief White said previously. “Right now, though, we are happy to have a person of interest who we could question. We are confident as a police agency that this person knows something about what occurred.”

As MEAWW reported earlier, the medical examiner listed Hoover's cause and manner of death as a homicide and confirmed that he died after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his head. Investigators believe that Hoover, who lived alone and was reportedly single, was killed in a domestic incident that turned violent. Chief White also stated that the killing was clearly targeted and the murderer is someone Hoover knew. “This was not a random act,” White added, as per Law and Crime.

Hoover’s mother died four days after him

A funeral ceremony for Hoover was held last Sunday, April 30. In an obituary, Hoover’s family noted that his mother Lauretta died four days after his horrific death. Hoover was one of seven children and was Lauretta Hoover’s only son. His family paid him a moving tribute, saying, "We, the family of Devon Hoover, wish to express our profound sadness at the loss of a beloved son, brother, and uncle. We grieve his untimely death and will miss him greatly. We are so grateful for the many words of kindness and stories from people who were touched by his life. He was a gift from God and used his talents to bless many."
