DETROIT, MICHIGAN: As police continue to investigate the death of the beloved neurosurgeon Dr Devon Hoover at his mansion in the Historic Boston Edison District, several questions remain unanswered. The 53-year-old was found shot multiple times in the head on Sunday, April 23, after officers arrived at his home for a wellness check.

The respected doctor was killed in what police believe was a domestic incident that turned violent. Police said Hoover, who lived alone and was reportedly single, was found wrapped in a plastic sheet in a crawlspace in his attic. No arrests have been made in the case yet.

What was Devon Hoover's cause of death?

As reported by ClickOnDetroit, the medical examiner listed Hoover's cause and manner of death as a homicide and confirmed he was shot multiple times in the head. Investigators reportedly found his car dumped at a separate location on Detroit's west side, per the department.

'Anchor of the block'

The renowned neurosurgeon – who worked at Ascension Healthcare which operates out of St John Hospital – was beloved by his patients and his community, resulting in an outpouring of grief at his murder. “If you know anything or if you have any idea, tell somebody because this man did nothing besides amazing things for people,” said former patient Megan Beeme. Hoover loved his profession and his neighborhood. He moved into the Boston Edison District and restored an Albert Khan-designed home, originally constructed in 1915 for the founder of B Siegel. The doctor allowed his neighbors to host parties and functions in the historic property, which was located in one of the most upscale neighborhoods in the city – having been home to numerous Michigan celebrities including boxing legend Joe Louis and baseball icon Willie Horton.

"It's going to take some time to wrap your head around what has happened," Hoover's neighbor, Jonathan Shearrod, told The Detroit News. He described the late neurosurgeon as an "anchor of the block" who was "extremely involved in the neighborhood" and regularly hosted parties and functions in his luxurious home. "I just can't imagine anyone experiencing that in their home or just having to face that kind of terror where you live," Shearrod added.

Police investigation continues

It's worth noting that the Detroit Police Department has been rather tight-lipped since the discovery of his body on Sunday. This could mean they have sufficient information considering they have not appealed to the public for assistance. It has been established that there was no forced entry to his home and that the doctor was shot in the head multiple times. Police sources made it clear that the operating theory is he knew his attacker.

St John Hospital released a statement in the wake of the tragedy, calling Hoover "a dedicated and well-respected member of the Ascension Michigan family" who "will be greatly missed by our community." The hospital added, "Our sincerest condolences and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow associates during this incredibly difficult time." Before joining Ascension, Hoover worked as a resident doctor in Henry Ford’s neurosurgery program from 1997-2002. According to US News and World Report, he graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine and had practiced neurosurgery for more than two decades.
