SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: San Francisco Democrats are facing criticism and have been called 'mean girls' after they prevented a lesbian Asian woman, Cyn Wang, from forming a liberal club in the city called the Westside Family Democratic Club. The reason for the ban was twofold - the inclusion of the word "family" in the title and Wang's support for a recall of a school board that was seen as overly "woke."

This decision has sparked accusations of hypocrisy and intolerance among the city's Democratic leadership, who are typically associated with more liberal and progressive values. Wang's club faced a lot of opposition and was subjected to various accusations, including allegations of racism, as well as being purportedly funded in secret by Republican groups.

Who is Cyn Wang?

Cyn Wang is a Chinese immigrant and former Obama administration staffer who is a staunch Democrat. With her liberal views and her vote for Joe Biden in the 2020 election, Wang seemed the ideal candidate to lead a liberal group. She is an intersectional feminist and has been vocal in her condemnation of the Republican Party, which she considers the greatest threat to democracy. Wang's marriage to a Mexican immigrant who recently received his green card exemplifies her support for immigration and diversity. She also runs a small family business and sends her daughter to public school.

Despite her qualifications and support for the Democratic Party, Wang encountered obstacles when she tried to form a liberal group called the Westside Family Democratic Club. She assumed that the Democratic County Central Committee (DCCC) would approve her club without any problems, but she was wrong. When Wang and her fellow club members attended the Zoom meeting, they encountered opposition from San Francisco Democrats who accused them of being racist and secretly funded by Republicans. The experience frustrated Wang, but she remains true to her political values and goals.

'It’s very Mean Girls'

"My mouth was agape," Wang told the San Francisco Chronicle. "Those allegations could not be more false. Fighting systemic racism is one reason I’m involved in local Democratic politics. To me, it lifted the veil on how narrow of a definition they have of what being a Democrat means." Even DCCC member Janice Li said the meeting gave "mean girl" mentality. "It’s that 'You can’t sit with us' mentality that makes me very uncomfortable with the state of San Francisco politics," Li told the outlet. "It’s very: 'You’re not even allowed in.' It’s very Mean Girls."

The club's main objective was to advocate for the improvement of public schools, enhance public transportation, increase housing availability, and maintain cleanliness in the streets, which are all causes supported by the local Democrats. The group had met all the necessary criteria to be chartered, which was pointed out by Honey Mahogany, who serves as a DCCC chairman. Despite that, Wang's proposed club faced significant opposition and a local tenant activist even told them, "F**k you." "F– you, Westside Family Democratic Club!" Jordan Davis said at the meeting. "I yield my time! F– you!"

'I know a Republican when I see one'

Meanwhile, Brandee Marckmann, who was against the recall of the school board, publicly accused the group of having conservative views. "I know a Republican when I see one," he said. Members subjected Parag Gupta, one of the parents from the parent coalition that helped found the club, to intense questioning that left him shocked. The members asked invasive questions about the group's income levels, racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, and even their voting patterns regarding the school board recall.

"We’re just starting out," Gupta told the DCCC. "We seek to be an inclusive club, and we seek to be representative of all demographics, genders, races and inclusive of all families. If someone considers themselves a family, we consider them a family," said Gupta. Despite his attempts to address the criticism, the DCCC managed to gather enough votes to temporarily shut down the Club.
